Pakistan v South Africa

Brian Murgatroyd
15-Apr-2004

At Faisalabad, October 7, 2003. South Africa won by 13 runs (D/L method). Toss: Pakistan.
Pakistan's slow over-rate and the strange tactics of Yousuf Youhana, their stand-in captain, combined to hand South Africa a series-turning win. With the visitors wobbling in the face of some furious fast bowling from Shoaib Akhtar, Youhana opted to take him out of the attack with two overs unused - even though the onset of bad light was sure to mean he would be unable to bowl again later. South Africa's batsmen, duly reprieved, scored 15 runs from the next three overs to ensure they were comfortably ahead of the Duckworth/Lewis par score when offered the light by the umpires at the scheduled close of play with Pakistan still five overs short of bowling their allocation. Nine no-balls - including six by Saqlain Mushtaq - and six wides did little to help Pakistan's cause, while Kallis produced the most assured batting of the day before he was spectacularly yorked by Shoaib the ball after gloving a waist-high beamer for four. It was another bad-tempered match, with Pollock fined his entire match fee for showing dissent when an appeal was turned down and Boucher cleared of a charge of using abusive language to Shoaib Malik.
Man of the Match: J. H. Kallis.
