Pakistan v West Indies 1999

At Bristol, May 16

15-Apr-2000
At Bristol, May 16. Pakistan won by 27 runs. Toss: Pakistan. International debut: R. L. Powell. In front of a vociferous crowd - mostly their own supporters - Pakistan overcame a grim start thanks to their superior depth in batting and bowling. At 42 for four in the 19th over, Wasim Akram's decision to bat under leaden skies looked questionable. But Lara, a bowler short to beef up the batting, persisted too long with his three strike bowlers. Ijaz Ahmed saw off the immediate danger, and allowed Wasim and Azhar Mahmood to feast on past-timers. Lara was hampereed by an ankle injury to Arthurton, and ended up giving the 47th over to the debutant Powell, with disastrous results:all but four of the last 15 overs came from second-string bowlers, enabling Pakistan to crash 80 off the last 48 balls. West Indies began with a bemused Campbell edging an intended pull of Shoaib Akhtar's first ball for six over the slips. Shoaib gained revenge in his next over when Campbell missed a straight, extremely fast, delivery. None of the top order prospered against an unrelenting attack, and it fell to Chanderpaul to fight back single-handedly.
