A powerful partnership from Ben Rohrer and Daniel Smith set up a six-wicket win for New South Wales over Tasmania in the second match of Lismore's Festival of Cricket. The match was played in a dusty haze similar to that experienced in Sydney on Wednesday, and the Blues bounced back well from their loss to Victoria on Tuesday.
Travis Birt scored 90 from 103 deliveries after being sent in, and with support from the captain George Bailey (38) guided the Tigers to 257 in their 50th over. Brett Geeves made the perfect start to Tasmania's bowling effort by picking up both openers for 1 each, and he finished with 3 for 22 from nine overs.
But Rohrer and Smith steadied the Blues with their 156-run stand, which featured strong hitting from Smith and a more controlled approach from Rohrer. Smith fell for 89 from 85 balls late in the chase and Rohrer remained unbeaten on 95 after receiving help from the captain Dominic Thornely, with 32 not out, to reach the target with four balls to spare.
New South Wales are using the three-team series as a warm-up for the Champions League Twenty20, which begins in India in early October. The next game in Lismore was to be between Victoria and Tasmania on Thursday.
