Ruby Monaghan, Australia's first opener, dies aged 96

Ruby Monaghan, who has died at the age of 96, was the second woman to face a ball in Test cricket when she opened for Australia against England at Brisbane's Exhibition Ground in 1934-35.

Picked as an 18-year-old after a strong performance for New South Wales against the tourists a fortnight before the first Test, the diminutive Monaghan played her only two internationals in that inaugural series but managed just 29 runs in her four innings.

She took to cricket after playing Vigaro, a then-popular game sometimes described as a hybrid version of cricket and baseball. She played softball and tennis after retiring from cricket.

Monaghan was retrospectively awarded Women's Test Baggy Green cap No. 3 after Australian men's and women's cricket administration were merged in 2003.
