Scott Styris, the Man of the Match in the one-day international against India at Cuttack, has been fined US$2500 for dissent. Styris made 68 at a key point in New Zealand's run-chase, having picked up three wickets earlier, but his day was marred by his run-in with AV Jayaprakash, the umpire who gave him out.
Styris was adjudged lbw to Murali Kartik, and though he was on the front foot, the decision looked fair enough. But Styris was irate, and appeared to mouth words to the effect of "you've got to be f**** joking" to Jayaprakash. Ranjan Madugalle, the match referee, hauled Styris up for that, but stopped short of suspending him, as his behavioral record prior to this in international cricket had been excellent.
New Zealand had been at the receiving end of two harsh decisions earlier in the day, when Chris Harris and Lou Vincent were both given out lbw despite having inside-edged the ball onto their pads. The erring umpire, on both those occasions, was Neil Mallender.
