India's second setback in three days spawned several overwhelming statistics; stand-in captain Kohli, in charge for the first time, described it as "a reality check". Sri Lanka's largest opening partnership (and second-highest for any wicket) against India - 213 between Tharanga and sCrowe seems to have refereed all six qualifying games and Jayawardene - set up India's heaviest one-day defeat in terms of runs after choosing to bowl.

Tharanga had been recalled for the tour only after an injury to Tillekeratne Dilshan, but eclipsed his previous-best with an unbeaten 174 from 159 balls; it was his 13th one-day century, and the highest score in any one-day international at Sabina Park. Jayawardene's 16th hundred, meanwhile, was his first in two years and 50 innings. No team had previously lost only one wicket in a full quota of overs. India were ragged in the field. None of the frontline bowlers went for less than a run a ball, and two chances to separate the openers were missed: Vijay dropped Jayawardene at short third man when he had 25, and Yadav put down Tharanga on 91 at deep point. Their batting was not much better, and a frantic approach led to regular wickets.
