India v Sri Lanka

Wisden's review of the sixth match, India v Sri Lanka

15-Apr-2014
At Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, July 9, 2013. India won by 81 runs (D/L). Toss: Sri Lanka. India 5pts.
Another weather-affected match and another pitch that offered all things to all bowlers rendered batting a struggle. India's toil seemed to justify Mathews's decision to bowl first. Rohit Sharma had fought his way to 48 from 83 balls when rain ended the innings after 29 overs; Kohli had needed 52 deliveries for 31. In his 400th one-day international, Jayawardene became the first outfielder to take 200 catches when he held Dhawan at slip. In such conditions Sri Lanka's target, reset to 178 from 26 overs after a break of four and a half hours, was palpably beyond them. So too was the 167 that would have eliminated India on net run-rate and made West Indies their opponents in the final. If anything, conditions became even more difficult for batting. Within his first five overs, Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck four times, including Jayawardene and Sangakkara, who fell first ball to a harsh lbw decision; only Chandimal, with 26 from 58 balls, survived more than 22 deliveries as Sri Lanka succumbed for 96, the lowest total by a Test nation in a one-day international in the Caribbean.
Man of the Match: Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
