WEST INDIES v AUSTRALIA 1954-55

Australia took command from the start. McDonald and Morris began with a partnership of 102 and Harvey, scoring his thirteenth Test match century, and Miller shared in a third wicket stand of 224. Each hit fifteen 4's. Profiting from missed chances, Walcott made a brave effort for the West Indies, but they could not recover from the loss of five wickets for 101. Walcott drove with fine power, especially off the back foot, and he hit twelve 4's. Apart from Smith, who stayed while the fifth wicket realised 138, he received poor support, and when the big stand ended Lindwall, whose accurate fast bowling deserved better reward, soon finished the innings.

So the West Indies followed on 256 behind and for a time they fared better, thanks largely to admirable batting by Smith and Holt. Smith hooked and drove splendidly and well deserved the distinction of hitting a century on his first appearance in a Test match. His 104 occupied three hours forty minutes and contained fourteen 4's. Then the bowlers regained the mastery, the last six wickets going down for 66, and Australia needed only 20 runs to win.

In the absence of Johnson, who hurt a foot while batting, Miller captained Australia for much of the game.
