WEST INDIES v AUSTRALIA 1983-84

West Indies won by an innings and 36 runs, securing the series and retaining the Frank Worrell Trophy. The Australians entered the match only three days after their depressing defeat in Barbados and their problems were compounded by injuries to Wood (broken finger) and Hogg (strained Achilles' tendon) which kept them out of the match. This meant a third pair of openers for the series in Phillips and Ritchie - the latter was unaccustomed to the position - and both fell soon after Hughes had won the toss for the first time in the series.

So it was left to Border again to prop up the first innings with a typically fighting 98. West Indies then accumulated their third successive total in excess of 450, Richards and Richardson making their hometown crowd ecstatic with individual centuries. They put on more in their third-wicket record for West Indies against Australia (308) than Australia totalled in either innings. While Richardson was lucky to survive a straightforward catch to the wicket-keeper off Lawson when 38, Richards offered nothing but a broad bat, striking 30 4s in the highest score yet recorded in a Test at the Recreation Ground. Both were victims of Rackemann, who bowled 27 consecutive overs on the third day and never flagged.

On the fourth day, the Australian batsmen could find neither the spirit nor the technique to cope with their formidable task: the largest contribution to the innings came from 36 extras. Garner and Marshall, who took his 100th and 101st Test wickets by dismissing Woolley and Maguire with successive balls, routed them.
