West Indies v Pakistan, 2004-05

West Indies v Pakistan, 2004-05

Fazeer Mohammed
15-Apr-2006

At Gros Islet, St Lucia, May 22, 2005. Pakistan won by 22 runs. Toss: West Indies.
In the most competitive and entertaining match of the series, West Indies closed in on a daunting target courtesy of Gayle's 11th one-day hundred, only to falter again and suffer a second successive whitewash, following South Africa's 5-0 clean sweep completed just a week earlier. It was West Indies' ninth consecutive one-day defeat. Shahid Afridi set the tone for the run-feast, belting 56 off 30 balls, and the rest of Pakistan's batsmen followed his example. The innings lost momentum in the final ten overs, but, critically, Kamran Akmal smashed the last three deliveries of the innings, bowled by Bradshaw, for sixes. Gayle and Hinds set West Indies on course before Abdul Razzaq struck with the first of his four wickets. But it was Gayle's inability to carry on to the very end that was again crucial. When he was caught at cover in the 46th over, it exposed that vulnerable tail, and Pakistan swept up.
Man of the Match: Shahid Afridi. Man of the Series: Shahid Afridi.
