New Zealand v West Indies, 2013-14

Wisden's review of the third ODI, New Zealand v West Indies, 2013-14

15-Apr-2014
At Queenstown, January 1, 2014. New Zealand won by 159 runs. Toss: West Indies.
This game was minutes away from another washout, but the weather cleared around the Remarkables mountain range just in time to allow a feat that matched the stunning location. The New Year was welcomed in by a new world record, as Corey Anderson blasted the fastest century in international cricket, a 36-ball display of fireworks that edged Shahid Afridi's 17-year-old mark by one delivery. In October 1996, Afridi had batted for Pakistan at No. 3 against Sri Lanka in Nairobi - but Anderson was at No. 5, and - in a contest reduced to 21 overs per side - arrived at the crease as late as the eighth over. It was scarcely believable, despite the small boundaries and ragged bowling, when he reached his hundred with his 12th six in an over from Miller costing 27 - the most expensive of an innings in which 13 overs leaked double figures. In all, Anderson faced 47 balls, and hit 14 sixes en route equalling the fastest List A hundred, by Graham Rose for Somerset against Devon at Torquay in 1990. But it wasn't the innings' only hundred: Ryder's 46-ball century (the sixth-fastest in one-day internationals) had to settle for second billing. He had 41 when Anderson joined him, but reached three figures an over later during a stand of 191 from 75 deliveries. Once West Indies lost three quick wickets, New Zealand's only concern was completing 20 overs before the rain returned.
Man of the Match: C. J. Anderson.
