India v England, 2014

Wisden's review of the third ODI, India v England, 2014

David Clough
15-Apr-2015
At Nottingham, August 30. India won by six wickets. Toss: India.
England once again failed to deal with India's spinners, on a pitch which defied the expectations of both sides. The Test surface here seven weeks earlier had officially been judged "poor", and there was lavish turn from the start, especially for Ashwin. After another promising opening partnership, England lost their way so comprehensively that they managed only one boundary between the 18th and 44th overs; their powerplay mustered a paltry 12 for one, all in singles. Cook, who went past 3,000 one-day runs, had already gifted a maiden international wicket to the very occasional off-spin of Rayudu. Bell was run out for the 16th time in the format - an England record - and Morgan attracted a beauty from Ashwin that turned, bounced and kissed the outside edge. Despite Buttler's best efforts, batting with unusual but necessary caution as wickets fell around him, and some unexpected late hitting from Tredwell, England's total looked utterly inadequate. India's batsmen confirmed as much. Finn marked his long-awaited international return with the wicket of Rahane, but Kohli began to exorcise the memories of a horrific Test series, and the fluent Rayudu contributed a career-best as India cruised into a 2-0 lead with seven overs to spare.
Man of the Match: R. Ashwin. Attendance: 17,007.
