Pakistan v Sri Lanka

Wisden's review of the Final of the Asia Cup, Pakistan v Sri Lanka

15-Apr-2015
At Mirpur, March 8, 2014 (day/night). Sri Lanka won by five wickets. Toss: Pakistan.
Thirimanne's second century of the tournament - he had made 102 in the opening game, also against Pakistan - turned out to be the difference between the sides as Sri Lanka ended an unfortunate run in tournament finals (they had lost their last four). After playing second fiddle in a brisk opening stand with Kushal Perera, then seeing Sangakkara depart first ball, Thirimanne matched the previously out-of-form Jayawardene run for run in a stand of 156 that all but settled matters. He looked set to bat through the innings, but became Saeed Ajmal's third victim when the finishing line was in sight.
Earlier, Malinga had ripped out Pakistan's top three with only 18 on the board, before left-hander Fawad Alam repaired the damage with his maiden one-day international hundred. Fawad finished unbeaten, and shared stands of 122 with Misbah-ul-Haq and 115 with Umar Akmal, before Malinga dismissed them both. He was the first bowler to take a five-for in a one-day international innings in which no other wickets fell; he had also taken five against Pakistan in the tournament's opening fixture. Pakistan's attack felt almost as one-sided: Ajmal's figures of three for 26 left his five fellow bowlers with a combined analysis of two for 233.
Man of the Match: S. L. Malinga. Man of the Tournament: H. D. R. L. Thirimanne.
