South Africa v England, 2015-16

Wisden's review of the first Twenty20 International, South Africa v England, 2015-16

15-Apr-2016
At Cape Town, February 19, 2016 (floodlit). South Africa won by three wickets. Toss:South Africa.England's run of six Twenty20 wins was halted amid a flurry of arms and legs on the final ball.By fumbling Root's throw from wide long-off, Topley failed to run out Abbott at the bowler's end and take the game to a super over. Ill-judged batting had marked a low-scoring encounter on a two-paced pitch. Morris changed that by striking the 14 required from Topley's last five deliveries - this after Topley had misjudged a chance to catch him first ball at third man in the previous over. Chasing a below-par 135, South Africa failed to heed the lessons of the England innings. Batsmen fell tryingto drive over the ropes, and they needed 32 from 15 deliveries before Miller hit successive boundaries off Ali. A fine penultimate over by the ice-calm Jordan put England back ahead, only for Morris to reprise his match-winning role of Johannesburg a week earlier; a frustrated Topley smashed off thebails with his hand, earning him a salt-in-the-wound reprimand from the ICC. England had struck 50 in the powerplay, but stumbled once Hales top-edged Imran Tahir: Duminy and Rabada were fortunate to escape injury when they collided, with Duminy holding on. Tahir continued to deceive, and almost completed a hat-trick with a googly that baffled Jordan but missed the stumps by a fraction. Buttler's unbeaten 32 from 30 balls proved the highest score of a match featuring only five sixes.
Man of the Match: Imran Tahir.
