South Africa v Ireland

Wisden's review of the first ODI, South Africa v Ireland

15-Apr-2017
First one-day international At Benoni, September 25, 2016. South Africa won by 206 runs. South Africa 354-5 (50 overs) (Q. de Kock 82, T. Bavuma 113, J-P. Duminy 52, F. Behardien 50); ‡Ireland 148 (30.5 overs) (J-P. Duminy 4-16). MoM: T. Bavuma. ODI debuts: T. Bavuma, A. L. Phehlukwayo, D. Pretorius (South Africa). Temba Bavuma was deployed as an opener, despite having done the job only twice in List A cricket. It proved a masterstroke: after putting on 159 in 24 overs with de Kock, he became the second South African to score a century on ODI debut, after Colin Ingram in 2010-11. A 22-ball 50 from Farhaan Behardien completed a towering total. William Porterfield fell to the second ball of the reply, and Ireland never recovered, losing their last seven for 71; J-P. Duminy was gifted a career-best 4-16.
