West Indies v South Africa, 2014-15

Wisden's review of the third ODI, West Indies v South Africa, 2014-15

15-Apr-2015
At East London, January 21, 2015 (day/night). South Africa won by nine wickets. Toss: West Indies.
Three days was not nearly enough time to recover from the beating West Indies had just taken, and they sank without trace again as South Africa claimed the series at the earliest opportunity. Philander was in rasping form with the new ball, and Imran Tahir twirled treacherously through the middle: West Indies were shot out for 122, with only Samuels reaching 20. Their batting was less a failure of temperament or technique, more a flagrant disregard for how a team in trouble might go about remedying their situation. The closest they came to responsible play was in a sixth-wicket stand of 31 between relative newcomers Jonathan Carter and Andre Russell. Poor Holder, who had taken on the captaincy with impressive seriousness, must have wondered what he had got himself into: one after another, his players discarded their wickets with abandon. Holder himself had Rossouw caught at mid-off in the sixth over, but half-centuries from Amla and du Plessis took South Africa safely home.
Man of the Match: V. D. Philander.
