On the sort of pitch most batsmen would gladly roll up and carry around, a refreshed and hungry - if less familiar - Australian side recorded a thumping victory. Hughes belatedly won his first cap in the 50-over format, and duly advanced to a century from 123 balls. But his fellow first-timers Aaron Finch and Usman Khawaja fell cheaply. The only other occasion a Test-playing nation had given debuts to the top three in the same one-day international was when Australia pitted Graeme Wood, Rick Darling and Graham Yallop against West Indies in Antigua in February 1978 in the absence of the World Series Cricket signings. Bailey captained here while Clarke nursed a hamstring, and his own innings was brimful of crisp shots, including the one that led to his demise on the midwicket boundary. Swift between the wickets and assertive with the bat, David Hussey (whose brother had been denied a farewell series by the selectors after announcing his imminent retirement) rounded off an imposing total with 60 from 34 balls. Sri Lanka never threatened to match the required rate, despite neat innings by Dilshan and Chandimal. McKay collected four wickets, while three were run out.
