Pakistan in West Indies 2011 April 16, 2011

Baugh replaces ill Thomas

Carlton Baugh has replaced Devon Thomas as the wicketkeeper in the West Indies squad for the first two one-dayers against Pakistan in St Lucia. Thomas has been diagnosed with chicken pox. Baugh will join the squad in Barbados for the ongoing pre-series camp.

Baugh's call-up is another setback to Denesh Ramdin's hopes of mounting a comeback. Baugh was part of West Indies' World Cup 2011 squad but had to pull out of the tournament with a hamstring injury sustained during the warm-up game against Sri Lanka. His place was taken by Thomas who played all of West Indies' seven games in the tournament. Thomas was also part of the squad for the tour of Sri Lanka last year as second-choice wicketkeeper behind Baugh.

West Indies meet Pakistan in the first two games of the five-match ODI series at the Beausejour Stadium in St. Lucia on April 23 and April 25.

Atleast WI will have a keeper that doesn't look like a no11 now.

@ Jorock are you serious about that team you post, Simmons as the WK, let me guess you saw on Simmons profile that he is listed as an occasional WK, the operative word here is OCCASIONAL. 2. You want us to built a team around players who refuse to commit to WI cricket. Sammy was appointed captain because Gayle, Pollard and Bravo refuse to sign the central contract, the very contract they strike for, IPL is their priority. 3. Taylor & Edward are old & damage players, Gabriel, Holder, Bess, CR.Brathwaite, Mc Clean & Dawes are younger & better investment. @ Godfrey Pieters yes Simmons is worst than AB and Akmal. @Silloh the 2 best defensive keepers in the WI are Walton & Thomas. Baugh is a better batman under pressure than Ramdin. People please use this website to analyze the stats. Please check out how many of Gayle & Sarwan runs have been score when the series have been lost. WICB finally get it these guys can't play under pressure, time to look forward.

I can't understand the omission of Ramdin

  • Ozcricketwriter on April 18, 2011, 4:56 GMT

I don't get why Thomas was preferred to Baugh in the first place?

  • jorock on April 17, 2011, 10:03 GMT

I think this team should be nurture for the Next 4 years Gayle(experience),Barath,Hyatt,Simmons(WK),Darrem Bravo,Sameuls,Dwayne Bravo(Cpt),Pollard,Russel,Taylor,Bishoo,Roach,Kirk Edwards,Fidel Edwards if they have to any impact in this next world cup. Please remember always your strength is fast bowling just back them .I beleive next world cup is at Australia and New zealand. This Bunch of players can take them to next level if they being backed up by the WICB.Otherwise you are going to miss the current to someother team like Irelend nor netherland.Eventhough westindies had trashed bangladesh in their bakyard in this worldcup they are going to see BD evolve in the next few years because they have gud bunch of players which is having average age limit around 23 years and their most aged players is 28 years.

I am flummoxed. WAS BAUGH fit all along? WHAT is the status on BARATH? IS he fit? PL TELL me no. Icannot imagine a fit BARATH not in this squad. LET SIMMONS DO some more glove work. LOOK at AB(SA); he can't be worse than(AKMAL). IN this way we will be able to accommodate SAMMY. SEE the drift? BAUGH can work for now.

How many matches has Ramdin played for the West Indies,he was given a run,and from the stats he failed.Baugh also had a run same result. Why is it Thomas now he is given a chance, because he is from the Antigua like Jacobs he is a failure before given a fair chance ? Jacobs was first choice when Brown was called before him.Brown failed,Trinidad David Williams recaled also before Jacobs and again he failed, and then Jacobs was finally given a fair and just run.I do not think we should go through that again. Do not forget young Bravo should have been the shining starr for West Indies in the World Cup,he is still in the ODI side and we are not hearing abot his failure. Please give D.Thomas the same run that Ramdin and Baugh got,and then we can start comparing. Thomas is the best wicket keeper batsman in the West Indies.Given a chance he will prove that.

@ b4u8me2 and andy wat u guys r so correct. I just don't how these selectors come up with these decisions ........... Goodness me!

  • Shilly77 on April 16, 2011, 22:09 GMT

Right move for me. He should have been picked in the first place if fit as Thomas is not up to international level at this moment.

  • on April 16, 2011, 21:47 GMT

shouldn't Baugh be the first choice? I mean during the WC Baugh was the first choice, and was showing potential and really good skills with the bat before getting injured and replaced by Thomas. Thomas on the other hand, didn't even impress for at least one innings with the bat. If Thomas hadn't been sick, Baugh won't had been recalled. So y was Thomas even picked ahead of Baugh? I just can't understand the selectors' minds.. wi cricket is becoming pathetic..

Baugh has a better average than Ramdin in this format and perhaps is a better candidate for T20i's. However, Ramdin is still the best gloveman the West indies has had since Dujon (no one questions that fact!). Baugh misses catches and Fletcher misses stumpings. Thomas' technique is fatally flawed and Simmons is only really useful as a stand-in keeper. Ramdin has had a few chances and apart from one massive century, where he applied his talent, he has had an otherwise forgettable time with the willow. However............ this 2011 series he has had a higher average THAN ANY OTHER KEEPER IN THE REGION!!! He is trying hard, and if he continues to apply himself, I can't see anyone denying him his rightful place behind the stumps for much longer.

  • Silloh on April 16, 2011, 17:35 GMT

Will be interesting to know what is Dinesh Ramdhin's batting average compared with Baugh's over the last two years, also wicketkeeping records. I have bno doubt that the figures will support that the selectors criteria to fill the position is based on everything else other than cricket. If so , attitude or otherwise we need to know. But may be this has been communicated directly to Ramdhin.

Lets hope some more of this squad get chicken pox so the selectors can correct some of the egregious choices they made, Thomas being one

  • b4u8me2 on April 16, 2011, 14:21 GMT

The WIBC is amazingly confusing and seem not to know what they are doing! If Baugh was fit all along, why did they pick Thomas to play the first two ODI!!! Wasn't Baugh always the first choice ODI wicket keeper to play in the World Cup but didnt get to play because of injury. So once he is fit again shouldn't he have been chosen over Thomas (who has not shown any worth to the team)?.
