West Indian contracts crisis

West Indies' leading players have ended their strike and made themselves available for international duty following the appointment of an arbitrator to settle their dispute with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB). Chris Gayle and other star players could now take part in the one-dayers against Bangladesh.
The original 13-man squad picked by the board for the Bangladesh Tests had boycotted the series due to a disagreement over contractual issues. The strike forced the selectors to pick a second-string side which lost both Tests, handing Bangladesh their first overseas series victory.
The WICB and the West Indies Players' Association (WIPA), which is negotiating on the cricketers' behalf, agreed to resolve the impasse by mediation on Tuesday, after meeting with Guyana president Bharat Jagdeo, who is also chairman of the 15-nation trading bloc Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM). Both sides agreed to the appointment of former Commonwealth secretary general Shridath Ramphal as arbitrator.
"It was agreed that in the light of the Mediation Agreement which the Parties expect to lead to the resolution of outstanding issues all the players will make themselves available for selection," they said in a joint statement.
"The mediation team, with assistance from the Caricom secretariat, would begin work immediately," they said. "Both parties have taken this step, mindful of the interest of their respective organisations but conscious also of their wider responsibility to the people of the West Indies and the international sport of cricket."
The agreement came hours after a weakened squad was announced by the board for the first two one-dayers against Bangladesh.

I'd agree to some extent to Nipun, and add some. As far as I can remember, a lot of the players in the ICL were actually dropped by the board.. especially Shahriar Nafees, Farhad Reza.. etc. Bashar and Kapali were long forgotten. And then when they outshone in the ICL, now some are is boasting about the BD A/B team. Nobody forced Bd to send the so called B team.. yet they got a staggering victory against a team rounded up in 3 days(unbelievable!).. and go on making a huge fuss about it.. I doubt even Shakib can play an innings like that in another 10 matches in any format. Mediocre players sparking only once in a while.. a lot of people here actually believe that if the Bd team were to play Dhaka Warriors.. or even Ireland, one day, t20, or test, they'd be beaten quite convincingly!
Posted by coverdriven on (July 23 2009, 21:54 PM GMT)I am amazed at the comments of Holding and Lloyd. This after having themselves been compromised by the Board and having themselves to take action. One recalls the LLoyd/ Kerry Packer saga. Holdings insinuations are more insulting. The question i have for Mssrs Holding is; does he think Dinanath Ramnarine has the power to make Gayle or Chanderpaul strike? you answer that! This is the same Chanderpaul who captained the side in the absence of Brian Lara in a past incantation of the Board's conflict with the players. The formula for solution is simple and has always been. It begins with the simple philosophy that the Board is a facilitator, repeat a facilitator, thats its job, fullstop. Its like an umpire when you don't speak of him it means he is doing a good job. If the WICB is paid 2million dollars and it spends 1,999,999.99 for cricket to play,it's job is done. When that idea takes hold then the product of WI cricket will be set to make profits and reap the respect and rewards.
Posted by Moe563 on (July 23 2009, 12:52 PM GMT)I will not be paying my hard earned cash to see those bunch of losers ever again. The Board is not the best run organisation in the world but for a bunch of guys who show no pride whatsoever in their performance(or lack of)to continually embarass the people of the caribbean like this is inexcusable.I think the people of the caribbean need to stand up and boycott these guys whenever they are selected again. I have been priviliged to see our great players from the late 70's,80's and part of the 90's and I will be satisfied for the rest of my life with those fond memories. However I am finished with this bunch who have contiually disgraced the maroon cap. I will not even be watching them on television for free. Come on caribbean people lets stand up and show these guys we will no longer be accepting this nonsense.
Posted by nahid1024 on (July 23 2009, 10:09 AM GMT)WI players have some nerve. Both WICB and WIPA are dysfunctional. WI players are paid $500K and don't even pay taxes according to Loyd and Holding. They are paid more than English, South African, and even Australian cricketers after taxes and their performance is next to Bangladesh in the international pecking order. Unbelievable. Can anyone believe that the board has to compensate the players for missing out on the IPL? WI cricketers are just plain greedy, insult the game by saying they prefer t20s to tests, and take everything for granted. Greed is the order of today rather than love of the game...
Posted by Nipun on (July 23 2009, 08:43 AM GMT)To all those guys obsessed with the false emotion that Bangladesh missed Aftab,Nafees,Kapali,Bashar, etc.lets put that in perspective:Aftab's test average-21,Kapali's test average-17,Nafees's test average-25,Bashar's test average-30.So the bottom line is:-There is nothing called Bangladesh national team,Bangladesh A,or Bangladesh B,or such staff. All Bangladeshi players are the same with limited ability. One or two good cover drives or one fifty in a year is not ANY indication of talent or ability, but a test average of 40+ is.
Posted by JITforu on (July 23 2009, 08:19 AM GMT)Wow Wow Wow........... Bangladeshi are very lucky to win the test series,,it is very unfortunate for West Indies,,,And now the West Indies players have ended their strike so we can hope the West Indies will come on their wining track and also Bangladesh will come on their loss track........best of luck for Bangladesh for the one day & 20:20 match......
Posted by MOFLN on (July 23 2009, 06:33 AM GMT)If WIPA comes out on top after arbitration again......then the WICB looses all credibility and relevance. For its sake I really hope that they (WICB) comes out on top on this one...What am I saying Get Rid of captain to cook and bottle-washer WICB is a sinking ship on the rocks because nobody said turn back.
Posted by wilacam on (July 23 2009, 03:12 AM GMT)The WICBC is a disgrace and an embarrassment to CARICOM and the wider Caribbean. They do not have the interests of West Indies cricket at heart but are a bunch of ego maniacal incompetents. Which other cricket team, inclusive of minnows like Bermuda and Ireland encounters visa problems, ticketing problems, accommodation problems on the eve of travel for overseas duty. Which other board owes players several months after they have completed a series? The posters who feel that these players should be punished for demanding to be treated as professionals either have little knowledge of the problems of Cricket West Indies or have no understanding of industrial relations. I hope the arbitrator finds that we need a new board!
Posted by Peligrosisimo3 on (July 23 2009, 01:19 AM GMT)Remember it was reported that over 40 test and first class cricketers declined to play and that placed the WI in crisis management really. Calling up guys who were "somewhere" available. I certainly don't feel that the striking players should automatically be installed because of their god given right to represent the WI because calling a strike 2 days before a match no matter who wants to admit it is DISRESPECTFUL to the board and to the WI fans. As much as I like C. Gayle as a batsman I must admit it doesnt look like he will ever be the WI captain again. Also Floyd Reifer is in my opinion not cut out for international cricket. He can prove me wrong. I'll wait. A WI captain who averages 9 as a batsman. Cum on. Its ridiculous. It the first test his bowling changes or non changes were ridiculous. He overbowled while underbowling others. The spinners hardly bowled anything in the second test. Whereas Ban showed what could be done with spin.Sammy, Best and Roach were overbowled.
Posted by Peligrosisimo3 on (July 23 2009, 00:57 AM GMT)Ok the WI fans are happy that the strike is over. I am also happy that the strike is over but let's face it, the WI team announced for the first 2 one day internationals still does not include these striking players. The test series between WI "third or forth" string team and Ban was pretty competitive so the average Bangladesh fan should not get carried away.Sure the players will be more confident now but the aim should be to try to replice winning performances more often.Bangladesh chased down 215 in the second test but with one decision here and there,a catch or two WI could easily have gotten to 250 lead, and Bangladesh could easily have been bowled out for less. They(Ban) trailed on first innings remember. When I saw the WI bowled out for 210 or there about I said the match is over, Bangladesh has won but I just felt that they would have lost a couple of wickets and made the situation "jittery" and sure enough they did. They captain litterly had to blast the last 14 or so runs.
