West Indies' Twenty20 captain Darren Sammy has not been contracted by the WICB for 2015-2016, along with allrounder Andre Russell and spinner Sulieman Benn. Chris Gayle, who had previously turned down West Indies contracts more than once, including last year, is not on the list of centrally contracted players which was increased from 12 to 15. Sunil Narine, who had also turned down a contract last year and is currently suspended from bowling in internationals due to an illegal action, also does not feature on the list.

The other two to miss out from the list issued for 2014-15 are Shivnarine Chanderpaul and the out-of-favour Dwayne Bravo.

The contracts, issued for the period from October 1, 2015, to September 30, 2016, include several batsmen who have debuted for West Indies in Test cricket over the past year and a half, including Jermaine Blackwood, Leon Johnson, Shane Dowrich, Shai Hope and Rajendra Chandrika. Legspinner Devendra Bishoo was also added, as well as fast bowlers Shannon Gabriel and Sheldon Cottrell.

Sammy had turned out for West Indies in the T20s against Sri Lanka as recently as November last year, though he was left out for the preceding ODI series on that tour. Globetrotting T20 specialist Russell had played both the ODIs and T20s on that tour. Left-arm spinner Benn last represented West Indies during their home Test series against England in April 2015.

A number of experts in this forum are ignorant to the fact that this game is now played on and mostly off the field. Players technic gets analysed and taken apart. Players go through highs and lows. Last time I checked Marlon was still classed as one of the WI ranked "worldclass" allrounders, WI do not have many such in all formats. The most important thing which is lost amongdt those complaining about players performing better in the various franchises. This is not primarily because of MONEY. Players are motivated by their audiences, spectators. They are PERFORMER, ENTERTAINERS. The crowds and support is the main ingredient mussing from WI cricket since the glory days. WI cricketers have ALWAYS been relatively less rewarded financially. Rather than QWERTY bashing some of us need to be in the stadiums supporting the players with our presence.

Now Holder gets a taste of what the contract does. WICB site said that he did not get clearance to play in Pakistan Super league because he has to play regional cricket which has some clash. Maybe he is the next to refuse a contract like Pollard, Narine, etc, after this one expires?

The days of obligation and honour representing your Country/Nation is a blurred line now. The Windies have suffered the most due to the scheduling clashing with their domestic and international season. The Board needs to re-think and adjust to getting the non-contracted players as available as possible for International duty. Alienating them for promising-youngsters who aren't ready for International Cricket will only cause an even further decline in the Test Rankings. So the Board better think seriously how they're going to solve the problem, because it can't continue like this and we'll end up losing our Test Status...

I 'M happy to see Leon Johnson being awarded a contract ,as he was not given a fair chance in my opinion . Is this a way of atonement by WI cricket board ,for their past transgressions against players like the said Johnson and Powell and others who were never afforded that fair chance ? IF such is the case ,then some others in the present squad have become the wrong beneficiaries of such .

russell must be test match allrounder as he can effect test mast results just like andrew flintoff

  • bansal97 on January 11, 2016, 8:41 GMT

russell is an exceptional talent,i think he can be atest allrounder with his raw pace and aggressive style of batting with a bit of maturity involved

Ok so its fair to say we will never see the likes of gayle bravo pollard russell etc etc play for the windies consistently so yes it is time to move on. But continuing to give samuels taylor and roach a contract is absolutely ridiculous! Whats wrong with giving johnson charles and carlos brathwaite a contract? Atleast they have crack! And rajendra chandrika? He is by far no where near international level! These selections are starting to make me sick, the WICB cannot be serious selecting these guys when there are still talented cricketers in the caribbean worth giving a shot. Another thing ive been completely puzzled on is the fact that jerome Taylor's run up is terrible he doesn't even get any elevation when bowling! Gabriel has good pace and he is definitely something to work with but if you freed his run up a little bit he might gain an extra 5 kms to his pace and will be injury free. I dont know how the bowlers cant get the most out of themselves when curtly ambrose is your coach.
