10.47 pm: It was a day for rewriting history. Dark clouds hovered over the Manuka Oval for most of the day, and we should have seen the signs....

Chris Gayle bludgeoned his way into the record books by scoring the first ODI double hundred in a World Cup, not to mention the fact that he became the first non-Indian to do so, and the first to achieve the milestone outside of India.

Suffice to say, this is the highest score ever made by an individual in the tournament's history. And in true Gayle style, this is the fastest ODI double century of all-time.

If that wasn't enough, Samuels and Gayle also broke the long-standing highest partnership for any wicket in an ODI, compiling 372 runs for the second wicket, which beat the old record of 331 set by Dravid and Tendulkar back in 1999. This is also the highest total for the West Indies in an ODI.

If you want more, then how about the fact that he equaled the record for most sixes in an ODI with 16, putting himself in illustrious company along AB de Villiers and Rohit Sharma.

Much was said about his misfiring habit of late, but he has silenced the doubters, and the world, in a big way. This World Cup is proving to become one for the ages.

Chris Gayle, Man of the Match: It was a fantastic day for me. From a team point of view it was a great all-round performance. We are looking forward to the next match against SA. When you work hard, then you start to see the results. Glad I was able to produce the goods today and score my first ODI double century. Losing Smith early was a blow, so when Marlon came we just tried to consolidate. It was a bit slow early on so we tried to make the necessary adjustments early on Eventually things became easier for us, and then eventually we were able to get this big total. Marlon also accelerated at the end too. Not worried about my bowling at all, I am too good. Coming from the loss in the first game, then beating Pakistan, and coming out on top again today, now we have to face South Africa. We have to settle scores against them after they beat us 4-1 recently.

Elton Chigumbura:: "There is a lot of work to be done. Gayle's lbw was just unlucky, but he played a massive innings today. I think we will be fine (morale wise), we have to just forget about what happened today. Obviously it was a hard score to chase down, it is a matter of just working hard, hopefully our bowling comes into play in the next game, and if we are chasing, hopefully we are chasing a lower score."

10.30 pm: This historic day in the Australian capital comes to a close as West Indies finally triumph against a spirited Zimbabwe to pull off a 73-run win (D/L method). Chris Gayle provided all the fireworks early on with his majestic 215, before he chipped in again with some vital strikes with the ball. Marlon Samuels also got some valuable time out in the middle, as he fought his way to 133*. The chase had its moments, with Brendan Taylor and Sean Williams putting on an 80-run stand for the fourth wicket, but once that broke the wickets started to come a bit more regularly for the West Indies.

ICC should definately reconsider their decision regarding the next world cup's format.
