Innings break: South Africa 330 for 8 (Breetzke 85, Stubbs 58, Archer 4-62, Rashid 2-33) vs England
England must score 331 to keep their ODI series against South Africa alive - exactly 200 runs more than they managed in their heavy defeat at Headingley in Tuesday's series opener. Matthew Breetzke top-scored with 85, becoming the first man to start his ODI career with five successive scores of at least 50, while six of the top seven went past 30.
It was the second-highest team total at Lord's in ODI history, and leaves England needing to beat the ground's record for the highest successful run chase - set by India in the 2002 NatWest Series final. South Africa are eyeing a second successive series win after beating Australia last month, while England have lost seven out of 10 ODIs this year.
South Africa mercilessly targeted Jacob Bethell and Will Jacks, who had to bowl 10 overs of occasional fingerspin between them due to the balance of England's side. They were happy to defend against Adil Rashid - who conceded a single boundary in his 2 for 33 - but took the 'fifth' bowler allocation for a combined 112 runs.
Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton made a bright start after Harry Brook put South Africa in, adding their third 50-run stand in five ODI innings as opening partners. Rickelton made the early running, punishing Brydon Carse and Saqib Mahmood when they overpitched, while Markram hit Jofra Archer for three consecutive fours after surviving an optimistic early lbw review.
Rickelton was the first man out, top-edging a steepling catch behind to Jos Buttler off Archer, and Rashid struck with his fourth ball to remove Temba Bavuma for 4. When Rashid took his second soon after, Markram chipping back a return catch on 49, South Africa had slipped from 73 for 0 to 93 for 3.
But Breetzke - who replaced the hamstrung Tony de Zorzi - and Tristan Stubbs led a rebuild, both starting steadily before accelerating when Brook went to his part-time options. Breetzke took charge, crunching Bethell for four then six in his first over, and reached his landmark half-century off 57 balls when steering Mahmood through point.
He has now scored 463 runs in his first five ODI innings and scored heavily through the off side, pouncing on any width offered. Breetzke was happy to pick and choose his bowlers, scoring 11 off the 26 balls he faced from Rashid but targeting Bethell, while Stubbs played in his slipstream after a quiet run of recent form.
Their partnership was worth 147 by the time Breetzke was pinned lbw by Archer's dipping slower ball for 85, but Dewald Brevis made his intentions clear early by hitting his first two balls for four. His cameo of 42 off 20 balls included three cleanly-struck sixes - one of which landed on St John's Wood Road - along with a mix-up with Stubbs, who was run out for 58.
Bethell picked up his only wicket when Brevis sliced him to Rashid at backward point, and Archer massaged his figures with two wickets in his final over. South Africa fell four runs short of the highest total in an ODI at Lord's - a record that has stood since 1975 - but the target of 331 still looked steep.
