Gurgaon: Services defeated Haryana by one run in a cliff hanger in their third one day inter-state encounter at the Nehru Stadium here on Friday.
Electing to bat on a wicket which appeared full of runs, Services after making a hesitant start were able to raise a respectable total of 217 for 8 in the allotted 50 overs. Sarabjit Singh emerged the top scorer with 58 runs hitting five boundaries of 108 balls before being caught by Vineet Jain off Parender Sharma. Opener K.K.Dixit (44 runs, 49 balls, 1x6, 5x4 ) and C.D.Thomson (42 runs, 55 balls, 3x4 ) also made useful contributions. A partnership of 69 runs between Sarabjit Singh and C.D.Thomson for the fifth wicket was also a highlight of the Services innings. Amit Nadkari remained not out on 26.
For Haryana Sonu Sharma bowled economically conceding just 18 runs in 10 overs to capture one wicket. However, skipper Parender Sharma was the most successful bowler taking three wickets at the cost of 32 runs while Pradeep Jain and Manish Sakhalkar took two wickets each giving away 35 and 60 runs respectively.
Chasing a target of 218 at an asking rate of 4.36, Haryana looked certain to win at one stage, but lost the match by the narrowest of margins when four balls remained to be bowled. They were all out for 216 runs in 49.2 overs.

Solan: An unbeaten 114 by Vivek Mahajan put Punjab in a commanding position against Himachal Pradesh at close of play on the first day of their three day North Zone Cooch Behar Trophy league match at the YS Parmar University ground here on Thursday. After dismissing the hosts for 125, Punjab scored 279 for eight at stumps.
Yuvraj Singh won the toss for Punjab and asked the hosts to bat first. Hari Krishan Kali dealt Himachal Pradesh three early blows with only 10 runs on the board. Hitesh Angrish (31) and Pankaj Kapoor (19) added 40 runs for the fourth wicket when Angrish was sent back to the pavilion by Yuvraj Singh. Another two wickets fell in quick succession and Himachal were 57 for six. No 10 batsman Anuj Pratap Singh (31) brought some respectibility to his team's total and Himachal managed a modest total of 125 runs. Yuvraj Singh was the most successful bowler picking up four wickets for 29 runs.
Punjab lost skipper Yuvraj Singh to the second ball of the innings. Ajay Partap Singh sent him back without scoring. Geoffrey Boycott analyses the first NZ-India one-day match at Rajkot

Batting first New Zealand gave an exceptional display of constructive aggression

Geoffrey Boycott

Batting first New Zealand gave an exceptional display of constructive aggression. After the first few overs the openers picked their spot with a mixture of classical shots on the floor and thumping good length balls 'over the top'. The bowlers were powerless to curtail the run rate because the pitch was so true with a nice even bounce. With field restrictions only allowing two men outside the 30 yards circle. Tendulkar did the only thing he could which was to swap the bowlers around and not leave any bowler on for long.
Sadly for India it didn't matter who bowled at which end or where the fielders were placed. It was 'slaughter in the sun' as Spearman in particular pulled and drove with ease. Left hander Twose was a revelation as he got his right leg out of the way to make room for himself and whack the ball into every leg side gap. It was almost as if he was toying with the bowling. At one stage with Astle batting nicely and the dangerous Cairns just beginning to tune up there was a danger of New Zealand scoring 400. But Astle got himself 'bogged down' consciously trying to make sure of his century and in doing so ran Cairns out stupidly. Astle eventually got his hundred but at a cost of doing India a favour of getting rid of the most destructive batsman in the New Zealand team and slowing down his own batting. After that the tempo increased again and with so many wickets in hand the loss of a few didn't hamper the run rate. All it did was flatter a few bowling figures !
For future games it is vital that India find two bowlers who can bowl ' at the death' very straight and in the block hole. Nobody does it consistently and so length balls were being smacked for huge sixes and the scoring of runs could not be controlled. Captain and bowler should be on the same wavelength as to exactly what line and what length the bowler will bowl. When the ball is being walloped all over the ground bowlers one under pressure and can't always think straight. May be Sachin has to be much firmer and tell them where he wants them to bowl. Then they are in trouble if they don't do as he says.
India are notoriously a poor chasing side and if they were to get the huge target then the guys would have to play 'out of their skins' and would need some luck. They got some good fortune when Tendulkar was dropped behind off the 3rd ball and then Nash went off injured after one over. Ganguly made 7 glorious shots for boundaries but Dravid was at his best. Jadeja with Singh got the team in a good position with sensible cricket but just when the tempo needed to be raised Singh holed out in the deep. From then on India committed cricket suicide. Jadeja slogged one up in the air and was dropped. Bharadwaj tried to hit his 2nd ball for 6! He never gave himself time to get in and get used to the pitch or the bowling. A stupid inexperienced shot was followed by Chopra dragging his foot out of the batting crease.

Rajiv Nayyar bats for over 1000 minutes

It is not every time in a first class match that a batsman can be at the crease for over 1000 minutes

It is not every time in a first class match that a batsman can be at the crease for over 1000 minutes. But the Himachal Pradesh captain Rajiv Nayyar did just that in his team's four day North Zone Ranji Trophy match against Jammu & Kashmir which ended in a tame draw at the Police stadium in Chamba on Wednesday.
Nayyar batted for 16 hours and 55 minutes in scoring 271, in the process creating a new individual record for Himachal Pradesh.
Resuming at the overnight score of 407 for 6 in reply to J & K's first innings total of 249, Nayyar opted to go for a statistical record instead of trying to obtain full points for his team. But he was successful in his objective and went on to get 271 runs to become the first Himachal batsman to score a double hundred. He occupied the crease for a record time of 1015 minutes. He faced 728 balls and hit 26 fours and a six. J & K who bowled a mainly defensive line were on the field for virtually three days after being all out for 249 just before close on the first day.
Nayyar who came in early on the second day when the first wicket had fallen at 39, was 89 at stumps and raised his score to 170 by the third evening. This was his 61st Ranji Trophy match (113th innings) and the marathon knock was his 13th hundred in the National competition. Incidentally he had also got a hundred against J & K last year. With Nischal Gaur who also hit a century against J & K last season, Nayyar added 146 runs for the second wicket, Gaur's share being a patient 69.
