TEAMS
It was 1978. Bang in the middle of World Series Cricket. Australia were touring the West Indies, who had to field a number of debutants through the series to get a competitive XI on the park. In the third of those Tests, in Georgetown, there were six debutants - "Sew" Shivnarine among them. And he did well, hitting 53 (from No. 7) and 63 (from No. 8) in the two innings.
Shivnarine bowled a fair bit of his left-arm spin variations in the Test, but without success. He went on to play the two remaining Tests of the series and five of the six Tests in India starting later that year, but success was limited. Shivnarine also played for ten seasons for Guyana, starting in the 1970-71 season as a lower-order batter who bowled a lot more and going on till 1980-81, batting higher in the order by then. He wasn't quite done yet, though. Not yet 30 at the time, he migrated to the United States, and played for their national team for the next many years before becoming a coach.
