It is not common for a Barbados Cricket League (BCL) team
to win anything these days; but a team of their umpires
got the better of a team of Barbados Cricket Association
(BCA) umpires in a special match at Queen's Park yesterday.
To the accompaniment of music from experienced umpire cum DJ
Halley Moore, the BCL team, which included League president
Glyne St. Hill and zone secretary Christopher McCollin, beat
their BCA counterparts by four wickets with 8.1 overs to
spare.
Set 132 in 35 overs, the BCL were helped to victory by an
innings for 40 from opener Wilbert Piggott and a seventhwicket stand between John Edwards (15 not out) and Wayne
Broomes (11 not out).
They came together after Lawson Cummins, bowling slow
medium-pacers, had taken three wickets.
The BCA's total was beefed up by opener Andrew Corbin's 38
and Hartley Reid's 19 after they had been reduced to 21 for
four.
Their partnership was ended when Reid, a police sergeant,
was bowled attempting to pull medium-pacer Carson Henry.
Dalton Holder, Barbados' most senior current umpire, batted
at No. 3 but was out for a fourth-ball duck.
The most successful bowler for the BCL was Cecil Phillips,
who took three for 12 in 1.4 overs.
