Antigua Hawksbills 114 for 5 (Hussey 24, Gabriel 2-16) beat T&T Red Steel 113 (Lewis 38, Laughlin 3-7) by five wickets
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Antigua Hawksbills completed a day when the CPL's table-toppers were undone by those bringing up the bottom. After St Lucia Zouks upset current leaders Jamaica Tallwahs, Hawksbills pulled off their first win of the season to prevent Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel from going clear at the top.
Things went well right from the start for Hawksbills, as they won the toss and then struck on the first ball of the match, with Sheldon Cottrell getting rid of Ireland's Kevin O'Brien. The other Red Steel opener Evin Lewis put together a couple of partnerships as he top scored with 38, but Man of the Match Ben Laughlin made big breakthroughs to derail the innings.
Laughlin dismissed New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor and Red Steel captain Dwayne Bravo, before offspinner Justin Athanaze sparked a lower-order collapse with two strikes in two balls in the 15th over. From 88 for 4, Red Steel lost six wickets for 25 runs in 21 balls to be bowled out for 113. This was the second time their fancied batting had floundered in three days, after having capsized for 105 against Barbados Tridents on Thursday.
Faced with such a small target, Hawksbills were never really in trouble in the chase, but it wasn't entirely a cakewalk either. After the experienced pair of Marlon Samuels and David Hussey had hit 20s, it came down to 27 off the final three overs, with six wickets remaining. Carlos Brathwaite finished things off with a flourish, smashing three sixes in a four-ball 20 that confirmed the win in 18.3 overs.
