Patriots can't survive the 20 overs. A dismal chase ends with a limp drive to extra cover. Full length ball on off, drives this in the air but flat to Permaul on the ring who shuffles back a few steps and takes this reaching left across his body at waist height.
Tallawahs vs Patriots, 18th Match at Port of Spain, CPL, Aug 29 2020 - Match Result
That's it from us tonight. Come back tomorrow at 10 am local time for the start of another doubleheader featuring the Barbados Tridents and St Lucia Zouks in the opener at Queen's Park Oval. For Matt Roller, I'm Peter Della Penna. Take care!
Tallawahs captain Rovman Powell: "I'm pretty pleased. The batting still hasn't got off but room for improvement and we'll take this win. We talked about someone from the top 4 or 5 batting all 20 overs because it's very important on this type of wicket and he did that very good for us today. We talked about not being three down in the Powerplay. Today we were 30 for 1. We try our best to reach 10 overs to reach two wickets max down and then we have guys who can come in and play their natural game. It worked somewhat today but not how we wanted. [Russell] is good now. He'll be back for the next game hopefully."
Patriots captain Rayad Emrit: "It's very difficult to understand what we're thinking when we're batting. They probably got 15-20 runs too much but we're not learning when we're batting. At the end of the Powerplay we were set decent at 39 for 1 but we keep doing the same mistakes over and over. We wasn't executing our yorkers well. I gave up two sixes, Cottrell gave up three sixes in one over. That's 30 runs. I still think 147 at the halfway mark, it's a better wicket today, we still could have got it."
Glenn Phillips named Man of the Match: "It was quite a tough pitch to start. All the bowlers bowled extremely well but we had a different game plan. We thought if we have more wickets in hand at the end then we have a chance for our firepower to go. It was nice that I could go right through. I've never got a not out in the CPL. That was a bonus. Looking at our last couple of games, we've definitely gone too hard. So trying to make our innings last a little longer, even if it's a little slower at the top to accelerate at the end, we just have to use our firepower to the best of our ability. The heat got to me. Running twos in that sort of heat, you don't have time to recover. I had nothing left in the tank at the end. We've really been talking about changing our momentum and taking a step forward."
5.50 pm Patriots remain firmly entrenched in the CPL cellar with one win from six matches. Tallawahs meanwhile finally get a total that their superlative spin attack can defend and they do so comfortably to break the deadlock with Tridents and Amazon Warriors to climb two points clear into third place with three wins from six matches. Turning point in the match was Nick Kelly spilling a straightforward chance at deep midwicket with Glenn Phillips on 27 in the 13th over. He was scoring at less than a run a ball at that stage but bashed five sixes in the last four overs to finish with an unbeaten 79 and that was the difference between the two sides.
