In the airrrrrrrrrrr.... And Tim David comes around and gobbles it up near the ropes! It was a slot delivery, Wiese missed his yorker-length ball outside off, Bidaisee attempted to go over long off. The plan was okay, but the execution was just short. He struck it with the middle part of the bat, but did not get the desired elevation to clear the long off fences. Tim David sprinted to his right side and kept his calmness, pouching the catch with the reverse cup technique while running, and there was celebration all around for the men in blue! Heartbroken moment for Bidaisee and the home team.
Kings vs Patriots, 6th Match at Basseterre, CPL, Aug 19 2025 - Ball by Ball Commentary
And that's a wrap for today's CPL action. Phew! What a close nail-biting match it was. I believe you guys all enjoyed the action-packed game of cricket. I hope to see you all again tomorrow. Until then, this is Rashad Mahbub signing off on behalf of Ranjith P and Chetan Kumar. Byeee.
David Wiese: "We got a little bit too close in the end. Just glad we pulled that one out of the bag. [Batting effort] It was a decent effort to get to 200, but we also know that in this field, 200 is probably just on par. So I think we did leave a couple in there. We didn't quite capitalise on those death overs. But I thought Johnson Charles batted beautifully to get us off to that start, and then Roston Chase and Tim David in the middle there just showed what they could do. And unfortunately, we couldn't capitalise in the end there. We knew that they had a lot of left-handers in the middle, so that would kind of nullify [Pierre] if it gets to that stage. So while the right hand was in there, the left and right combination, we thought we'd get him out of the way early, and he bowled beautifully, even when there were two left-handers in there. Just shows you the skill that he has. A lot of people say the left-hand off spinners can't bowl to left-handers, but he showed tonight what a skilful bowler he is. I think in that situation, if you need only 13 runs, it is kind of an even contest at that stage. Once the first ball went for six, you wanted to say you had nothing to lose now, because the game was definitely in their favour. So I just want to try and stick to what we spoke about in our analysis. Speak about what we want to do at the death and the game plan against the two specific batters, and not change anything, even if it's working, stick to it. And fortunately for me, I managed to nail a couple of wide jokers in the end. And Timmy [David] took a great catch on the boundary to seal it for us. Like I said, I'm still quite an experienced fighter, but I've got a couple of games out of my belt, so I think it's just about backing the bowlers, no matter what the situation is, no matter what happens. Always just have them send back the bowlers, as long as they're clear with what they have to do. You can't control the outcome, but you can just control your own execution, as long as the guys have a clear game plan. Sometimes it just doesn't work out for you, but if you just try and execute your best abilities and there's good thinking behind your game plan, that's all you can ask from the guys."
Jason Holder: "Proud of the guys, proud of the way we fought. At one stage of the game, we all thought we were out of the game. But credit to the way the boys fought right down to the last ball. Unfortunately, somebody had to lose; we came up a little short tonight, but still, there are a lot of positives to take from this game. [Bowlers] They did a reasonable job on this on the surface. In these conditions, we know around 200 is a par score here. We always back ourselves to chase it. We got off to a reasonable start with the bat, but we probably lost two or three wickets in the middle there, which really pushed us back a little bit. Then we had to rebuild. We rebuilt quite nicely there with a partnership between myself and Bidaisee, but unfortunately, again, we were just a little bit short. [Batting] I just try to pick my areas, pick my bowlers. The ground is very nice. It's a boundary scoring ground. So I brought myself to clear the boundary if I get the ball in my arc. Luckily, I got a few away and was able to get some momentum. Just one of those days; happy the way I batted, but also disappointed. [Bidaisee] For a guy coming into his first game and playing the way he did. Obviously, he was a little slow to start, but he kept his nerve, he kept his composure, and he got into it quite nicely; even with the ball, they won over a ball. I thought it showed a lot of heart; unfortunately, I didn't get another over. But looking at his performance, particularly, I was very, very pleased for him. Something I said to the boys at the very start is not to get too high, not to get too low. These are learning moments in their career. Now they just have to understand where they went wrong. And try to put themselves back in our scenario. And that scenario in their heads plays out visually first, and then they ask themselves a few questions as to how they'll go about it differently, but again, it's positive for both young players. Two Breakout players to come through show the maturity they showed; unfortunately, we didn't get across the line, but as I said before, the heart and the fight they showed were just remarkable."
CoachSanjay: "Holder has only scored 2 fifties in his 300 match T20 career, feel he can score many more than 50 today considering how well set he looks."
Player of the Match, Roston Chase: "[Last over] It was a bit nerve-racking. I think we made it a hard victory. I thought we could have won it a bit more outright, but I'm still grateful for the two points. [Partnership with Tim David] Firstly, I didn't recognize it was a hat-trick ball, but I just went out there just to get my innings going. Play a few balls, see what the wicket is doing, see the conditions, and then just try to play my natural game. [ODI to T20] It's not really hard for me to transition. I just tend to base my game on what's required now for the team, and that puts me in good standing in executing what I'm looking to do. So there's no pressure really in switching the format. So it was a good start for me, and I'm grateful. My bowling style is just to firstly keep it tight and build pressure, and then that creates the wicket opportunity for me. I don't really go searching for wickets unless the pitch is assisting; I just come in to play that bowling role and just give the captain that control that he's looking for. And then, as I said, the pressure would bring wickets. We had a rainout in the first game. We were excited and ready to go in that game, but obviously, this is our first game. As I said, I'm grateful for the two points. We left it a bit late to win the game, but it's a good win and a good start to the campaign."
10:55 pm What a rollercoaster of a match! The momentum swung back and forth so many times it was hard to keep track, but in the end, the St Lucia Kings have officially arrived in CPL 2025 with a statement win, while the Patriots' losing streak continues. The Patriots started with a bang, as Fletcher smashed 14 runs in the first over, setting an aggressive tone alongside Mayers. However, Pierre kept his cool, bowling a tight line and bagging two crucial wickets in the final over of the Powerplay, a brilliant move that completely shifted the momentum. But the Patriots fought back. Holder went on the attack, hitting 18 runs off Shamsi's first over to get the tempo back up. He almost single-handedly turned the game around, scoring a blistering 63 runs off just 29 balls. After Holder's departure, Bidaisee took charge against Shamsi, smashing three consecutive boundaries. Bidaisee, who was dropped on 7 due to a miscommunication between Auguste and Charles, started slowly without a single boundary in his first 18 deliveries, but after Holder's wicket, he found a new gear and looked completely untroubled at the crease. The drama wasn't over. In the penultimate over, Joseph left the field with an injury, forcing Gaston to step in and finish the over. Leading from the front, Wiese delivered perfectly executed yorkers in the last over. In a heartbreaking moment for the Patriots, Bidaisee played a spectacular debut CPL innings, scoring 50 runs off just 36 balls and taking the game right down to the wire, but it proved to be just a bit too much for him in the end. The Kings' batting unit collapsed at the very end in the first innings, failing to hit a single boundary in the last 17 balls of the innings, a dry spell that almost cost them the match. Ultimately, they held their nerve and managed to pull off a spectacular win right at the finish line.
