South Africa vs England, 1st ODI at Johannesburg, , Nov 20 2009 - Match Result

5pm The match has been abandoned. The umpires have seen enough and we'll have to wait for Sunday to get the series underway. With all the injuries in the England camp, they will be the happier of the two sides. James Anderson and Paul Collingwood have an extra couple of days to overcome their niggles and with no cricket to talk about, Mickey Arthur can extend his phony war for a bit longer.

There's little more to add, so we hope you'll join us for Sunday's match at Centurion Park starting at 10am (8am GMT). That's it from me, Sahil Dutta and from Andrew Miller, see you in a couple of days.

4.28pm It's still raining and we're told neither team are at the ground. Doesn't sound too promising.

3.55pm Not much going on out there. But what does James Tredwell's call up mean for Monty Panesar? Gnasher McGlashan, sitting next to me, reckons "he's gone from hero to sub-zero". Chortle. While you're waiting for cricket, you could always check out Monty's interview with Andrew Miller.

3.20pm Having just said there are no updates, news from the middle is that the umpires are out under umbrellas and the rain has returned. Ho-hum. The minimum we could squeeze in is a 20-over game, which would have to start by 8.25pm (6.25pm GMT).

There will be an inspection at 5pm (3pm GMT). To give you an idea of just how wet it is a provincial game between Gauteng and Free State up the road at Alberton has already been called off.

3.10pm No major updates from the Wanderers, but while the groundsmen continue to mop up, why not have a look at Martin Williamson's recollection of the rebel tours.

2.50pm The good news is that the rain has stopped and the covers are coming off. But the groundsmen reckon they'll need two hours to get things ready for play, providing there is no further rain. There's an inspection due at 3pm but it's unlikely to tell us anything we don't already know.

2pm The news from the ground is entirely bleak, I'm afraid. There has been 40mm of rain in the last three days, and it is still raining now. There are no SuperSoppers in action at the moment, which tells a tale, and the area around the crucial bowlers' run-ups is squelchy underfoot. The long-range forecasters predict more of the same is on the way. We will sit tight and hope.

1.30pm Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's live ball-by-ball coverage of the first ODI between England and South Africa at the Wanderers. I'm Andrew Miller, and I'll be joined at various stages today by my colleagues Gnasher McGlashan and our new London recruit Sahil Dutta.

Alas, the news from the ground is not good at present. The teams were forced to practice indoors on Wednesday after heavy rain left large puddles on the outfield, and there has been more of the same so far today.

The game was due to get underway in roughly an hour's time, but already we have got a significant delay in prospect, with a pitch inspection scheduled for 3pm (1300 GMT)

In other news, Kent's offspinner James Tredwell is being touted for a first cap after being called up as cover for the injured Graeme Swann, while Andrew Strauss is steadfastly refusing to get drawn into any mindgames, despite the best efforts of Mickey Arthur and Graeme Smith to get a rise out of him.

"A lot has been said, but not by me," said Strauss on the eve of the match. "We've always refrained from making big comments about the opposition because the world is round and these things can come back to haunt you pretty quickly." So there.
