length ball, smashed high into the night, it has gone so far up, deep square comes in, Kusal Perera is the fielder, he's misjudged it slightly but dives forward and takes a blinder! A stunning catch to win the game. The ball hung up in the sky for an age and was exceptionally well held to end England's stubborn resistance
That's it for today where Sri Lanka have gone one-up in this seven-match series. But stick around for all the best analysis from Colombo. We stay put until Saturday, for the second ODI is on the same ground. It's a day game, so a 4.30am GMT start, see you then, bye for now...
Presentation coming up. The Man of the Match is Tillakaratne Dilshan for his 88, wicket of Alastair Cook and outstanding fielding.
Here's Alastair Cook: "The first 10 overs we didn't bowl as well as we should have done. We dragged it back nicely but in the last few we always tend to leek a few more than we'd like. Moeen played a blinder but we lost too many wickets which you can put down to lack of match practice. We know if you get behind the rate its difficult. Mo showed us the way. It's frustrating because we're not putting a whole game together. We thought 300 was a par score on that wicket and our wides have cost us but there's a lot of positive things from today with the way we attacked Sri Lanka."
Angelo Mathews: "It was a good game of cricket. We could tick all the boxes. The fielding was outstanding - we highlighted that after the India tour. We still can improve but I though our batting was brilliant. We got Kusal Perera back in form and Jeevan Mendis played really well too."
England will rue a poor bowling display for their latest ODI defeat. Their seamers in particular were rusty and sent down 17 wides. It was also curious how Bopara only bowled four overs despite his success. Sri Lanka feasted upon England's poor start with the ball - Thisara Perera showed how to bowl seam in these conditions - and put their troubles after the India tour behind them.
A cracking start to this series, Sri Lanka have won by 25 runs but were made to sweat firstly by Moeen Ali's scintillating hundred - his first in ODIs - and then by Ravi Bopara who fought bravely but was ultimately left with too much to do. Sri Lanka batted well themselves, led by Tillakaratne Dilshan's 88, in a strong total of 317 that's proved enough, but by a smaller margin than they might have expected.
26 in 18 balls, nervy stuff, Bopara can't make a wrong move now. Perera's final over coming up...
wide of off stump and Gurney is able to leave this alone
goes leg side again but without connection and after some consideration decides on a single
swept from off stump and he finds the gap at square leg, superb shot, timed it beautifully, it hovered just above the ground to take the slow outfield out of the equation
strong thump down the ground only straight on the bounce to long-off and Bopara refuses the run
wide of off stump, Gurney plays a lofted cover drive! Gets it in the gap and Bopara is back on strike
Sri Lanka one wicket away now...
Tredwell backs away looking for a cut and gets bowled losing the top of his middle stump. The delivery skidded on quicker than Tredwell could attempt the cut stroke and he missed
Ajantha Mendis comes back, he's got a slip...
Still in the game England, what a match this is...
length ball, dead-batted, Bopara wants to play tip and run but Tredwell says no with the ball having not moved far off the popping crease
oh dear! A beamer and Bopara managed to hoik it backward of square for four. Real bonus for England, a beamer at head height and Bopara hooked it literally off his grille. Very valuable that for England
gives himself room and aims over extra cover, gets its high but not that long, it plugs and they get back for the second
back and hit hard wide of long-on but the fielder does well going to his right and saves the boundary
slower ball, Bopara tried to get across his stumps to flick leg side but could only get struck on the thigh pad
length on off stump, blocked into the covers
full on leg stump, Tredwell forward and getting a thick inside edge through square leg
driven up in the air and just over extra cover, only a single so Tredwell again keeps the strike
back and cut but only as far as extra cover
flatter delivery, nudged out on the on side but just a single
floated up and Bopara heaves it over long-on, huge strike and that's his fifty, yet another lovely little cameo here
gives himself room aiming off side but can only find cover
floated up on leg stump, flicked through midwicket and Bopara is immediately back on strike
