oh yes. Malinga has straightened off stump with a scorcher than landed near the toes and thundered past Bennett's pointless poke. All over. The Lions have mauled the Kiwis today. This is a thumping win. And to think SL under-achieved with the bat, and had to contend with dew while bowling. Black Caps down.
Sri Lanka vs New Zealand, 38th Match, Group A at Mumbai, Mar 18 2011 - Match Result
That's that then from the Wankhede. Here's Sahil Dutta's bulletin on how things panned out today. We are back tomorrow for a cracking Saturday, do join us for SA v Ban and Pak v Aus. On behalf of Sriram Veera and the rest of the gang, this is Nitin Sundar signing off. Cheers!
Presentations time
Sangakkara is Man of the Match: "It was quite hot there, we practiced two days in the heat, took a toll but we enjoyed it. When we won the toss, we knew the first 10-15 overs were going to be difficult, so we just rotated the strike and kept wickets for the end. There was more dew than we expected, something to keep in mind, but there is a long way to go before we can think of coming back here. We know we are well on our way, Murali the legend, bowling on one leg, bowled so well. We have a few days before the next game, and we hope he will be fully fit for the QFs. We want to make sure he enjoys himself, and we want him to bowl and take wickets."
Taylor: "We came with hopes of taking momentum into the QFs, but the way Kulasekara ... umm... err.., Kumar Sangakkara, played took us out of the game. We thought the 3rd umpire decision was out, but it wasn't and we had to get on with it. We were with the rate the whole way, but Murali bowled really well and we kept losing wickets. The injured guys are getting better everyday and hopefully will be around for the next game."
Here's the Points table then. SL and Aus are tied on 9 points, but Aus have a game in hand. If Pakistan win tomorrow, they can lead the table. NZ's NRR is +1.135, still well ahead of Pakistan's which is +0.729. NZ and Pak are tied on points with 8.
Yorker now?
no yorker yet. He bowls a mean bouncer and Bennett ducks under the flak as it whizzes by
slow offcutter on middle, Oram backs away again and waits for it to come before bunting into the covers for one
Oram is walking all around the crease, Malinga follows him with a full yorker and Oram barely gets the feet out of the way. Somehow, that missed leg stump
Oram's smashed another four down the ground. Another over-pitched ball on leg stump, he clears the legs and bangs it back straight. That's the Oram we know.
Oram seems to have left the hitting for a little too late. Over-pitched on leg stump, he hangs back, opens up the leg side by moving the front foot away and swats it away past mid on.
A bit of a farce to call this a Batting Powerplay. NZ have taken it. Better now than never. Malinga comes on and he'll be desperate to get a wicket (as am I, since he's my Fantasy captain :-()
Alter G: "NZ's net run rate is going to take quite a hit today. If Pak lose to Aus tomorrow, wonder if they will look at a virtual NRR target to get above them in the points table, or if they would be content finishing fourth?"
NZ's NRR is currently quite good. They'll still be ahead of Pak. Lets see how things shape up tomorrow.
flighted from round the wicket, its poked into the covers for one to end the over
slides a wicked straighter one past Bennett's befuddled prod. He's out there with a runner.
I think it's going to be referred, but Southee is a goner for sure. Rauf has given him out lbw and it has been refered. Carom ball, lands on middle, straightens enough to be hitting leg, around 4/5ths of the way up. Hits Southee's pad as he prods forward below the roll. All over bar the shouting.
Oram skips out again, gets to the pitch and whacks the on-drive to long on
drifting into the pads, tickled along to square leg for one more single
full on the pads, worked to square leg for a single
sliding down the leg side and called a wide
Mendis comes on.
Sachin: "It's like watching the All Blacks crash and burn!"
flat on the pads, turned away to square leg for one more
turning into the pads, turned through square leg for a single
flat and hurrying into the batsman, he under-edges the cut to short third man
flat outside off, forced into the covers for a single
speared onto the pads, Oram nudges off the pad to the leg side
short offie breaking in, worked round the corner for a single
Sidharth: "Has somebody bought a new computer game in the dressing room ? Where do these guys wanna go?"
straighter from Murali, another sweep but this time he doesn't get bat on it.
