India swept to a convincing 107-run win over Ireland in the first one-dayer at Dublin yesterday with Karuna Jain and Mithali Raj, the captain, both scoring fifties.
Ireland won the toss and chose to field, but India's openers soon got off to an excellent start with a stand of 78 for the first wicket. Though Monica Surma fell for 40, Jain took command and, with Mithali, put on a further 77 runs before India's lower-order chipped in with useful contributions to take their side to 212 for 5. Jill Whelan was the pick of the Ireland bowlers, finishing with the impressive figures of 2 for 36.
Ireland's batsmen were never in the hunt for 213. With Mithali chopping and changing her bowling attack - eight bowlers were used in total - the home side capitulated to just 105 all out, with Nooshin Al-Khadeer taking 2 for 21, to hand India's first ever win over Ireland.
India's women are on a four-week tour of England and Ireland. They face England in a Twenty20 encounter on August 5, ahead of a five-match one-day series and two Tests, the first of which gets underway at Grace Road on August 8.
