As it happened: Kolkata Knight Riders vs Mumbai Indians, Pune

By Sidharth Monga and Shashank Kishore

That becomes a hammering

KKR win with four overs to spare in the end. Pat Cummins 56 off 15. read it again and again. On a pitch that batters struggled for timing all night. MI will need to look at their top-order batting. The opening aside, KKR kept hitting, and it came off for Cummins. Thanks for joining us tonight. See you tomorrow.

That's the 16th over. Cummings has ended the match right there. Joins KL Rahul at the fastest fifty in IPL. In 14 balls. Hits the 15th for another six. What an innings.

Bumrah slayer

46 Number of runs Pat Cummins has scored off Jasprit Bumrah in 25 balls of T20 cricket without getting dismissed. That includes a six and a four in the 15th over of this game. KKR 86% favourites to win.

Fifty for Venkatresh

He has huffed and puffed to it, but he is still there. He has worked things out during the course of this innings. Instead of trying to force the heavy ball down the ground, he has now started to use the pace. It has taken him 41 balls, but he has scored 31 off the last 20. That's better than the rate needed right now. They are 72% favourites to win.

Extra bounce

44 Number of not-in-control runs scored through third man and fine leg in this match, the most in any IPL game in the last six seasons. And this match is not over yet. Has to do with the extra bounce.

Russell goes

In one ball, the win probability goes from 66 to 48. Mills gets a wicket first ball of a new spell again. And this time it is the huge one of Russell. The short ball again, and Russell is sort of handcuffed even as he looks to give himself room. Shoulder high, not too wide, and Russell ends up looking for the pull.

First round to KKR

Bumrah's second over goes for 12 runs, one of the two boundaries a top edge. Venkatesh continues to get better and better, tucking a four off the hip. The asking rate is now 8.71. They haven't let it hit 10 an over. They are 66% favourites to win now.

The leggie long hop

It does the trick once again. Just stops a touch on Nitish Rana, and he ends up not in control. The deep midwicket has to run in a fair bit to take this. KKR now 83 for 4 in the 12th. Again a shame for them to lose a wicket as Venkatesh has begun to find some touch, now 39 off 34. Eight overs to go after this. Andre Russell in. Might be time for Bumrah

Billings goes, Venkatesh finds some fluency

The first ball Billings faces after the last update, he steps out looking for a repeat of the earlier six off Ashwin, but the legspinner bowls it wider, making Billings reach for it, taking the toe end to long-off. It is a shame for KKR as this was the over where Venkatesh managed to hit his first six, a slog-sweep. Ninety-five required in the last 10. Three of those belong to Bumrah. Win probablility 39%

Billings keeps KKR ticking

Sam Billings looks comfortable right from ball one, and has hit two sixes in 11 balls: a loft down the ground off M Ashwin and a flat pull of Basil Thampi. However, Venkatesh iyer continues to struggle against hard lengths, and is now 24 off 27. Asking rate 9.54 for the last 11 overs. Win probability a tick over 40%.

Powerplay belongs to Mumbai

With the last ball of the field restrictions, Daniel Sams has Shreyas Iyer on the short ball. Perhaps just a bit of sponginess in the bounce, which is why Shreyas fails to keep it down and finds the deep square leg. It is now 35 for 2, and their win probability is 38%

Rahane gone

Out for 7 off 11. Top-edging a hook the first ball he faces from Tymal Mills. Ajinkya Rahane now has 72 runs at a strike rate of 110 this IPL. And most of it in the powerplay.

Still watchful

One ramp for four, one square-cut fielded brilliantly at point, and that's about all the adventure we have seen from the openers in the first four overs. At 16 for 0, they now need 9.12 an over and are only 42% favourites to win. Something about Ajinkya Rahane as opener doesn't sit well with the general KKR philosophy of playing T20 cricket.

Two overs, no boundaries

Ajinkya Rahane and Venkatesh Iyer have gone off to a watchful start against Basil Thampi and Daniel Sams. The powerplays in this IPL have been getting a high number of wickets perhaps because the ball has swung for longer. At 9 for 0 after two overs, they are still 52% favourites to win.

Big finish for Mumbai

From 58 for 3 in 12 overs, Mumbai have been rescued by a whirlwind 83-run stand off just 49 balls between Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma. At that stage, ESPNcricinfo's Forecaster pegged Mumbai to finish with 132. They've comfortably surpassed that courtesy the big finish. Kieron Pollard, who only got six balls to bat, ends the innings with back-to-back sixes off thick edges, ending on 22*. Cummins' final over goes for 23; his figures for the night read 4-0-49-2. KKR need 162.

Surya returns with a 34-ball half-century

This has been an innings of two halves. He took 18 deliveries to hit his first boundary. Off the next 17, he has managed four fours and two sixes, including a cute little glide over short third to bring up his half-century. All the elements of a typical Surya innings have been in display. The wrists, the whiplash, the sweep, the paddle and the ramp. All while ensuring he didn't lose shape in trying to hit out after a somewhat sluggish start.

Tilak 'Audacious' Varma

He's all of 19, but the confidence in his game shines through. Here is the World's No. 1 fast bowler steaming in at 145kph. What does Varma do? Calmly goes across, gets down nice and low. All along, his eyes are firmly on the ball as he scoops him from way outside off and clears fine leg with ease. In the same over, he also admirably uses the depth of the crease. Cummins uses the double-bluff by bowling full and Varma adjusts by clearing his front leg and drilling Cummins down the ground.

Unlucky Umesh

He could have so easily finished with figures of 2 for 15. Instead, he ends with 1 for 25, with his last two balls reading: 4, 6. The four was off a slower length ball that Surya walloped over midwicket. The six was a typical Surya ramp over the keeper's head. All he did there was hold his shape, arch back and use Umesh's pace.
The third ball of the over should've brought Umesh the wicket of Varma as he top-edged an attempted pull. It would've been straight into the mits of Billings, but lack of communication cost them. Billings stopped the moment he saw Rahane coming in from the corner of his eyes. Rahane for a split-second thought the keeper was going for it. By the time he put out a dive in the end, it was too late.

Mumbai's mid-innings stutter

Twelve overs in, Mumbai Indians have two of their best finishers potentially in a position to dictate a stuttering innings. Suryakumar Yadav's first 15 deliveries have just fetched 9. The scratchiness is understandable. He's coming back into competitive cricket after six weeks. With him for company is young Tilak Varma, who has shown promise in his two knocks so far. Varma is tall, uses his reach to good effect. Against spin, he goes fully forward or right back. Mumbai's projected score currently is 132. With Kieron Pollard still to come, that could change. But Mumbai need to start going, right about now.

Brewis and his no holds barred approach

Dewald Brewis has come in and looked to play his shots right from the outset. Early impressions: his is a game of no half-measures. If it's there, he will go for it. There's no fear. Off his second ball, he stepped out to wallop a perfectly-acceptable length ball over mid-on. He took on Pat Cummins with the pull shot. And even with the field spread out, he takes on Varun Chakravarthy and deposits his wrong'un first ball over deep midwicket. The best part is he didn't even look at the trajectory of the ball after making contact. Clean hitting. Good fun as long as he lasted.
One adventurous stroke too many has led to his downfall. Sam Billings pulls off an excellent stumping after Brewis misses a slog sweep. Varun CV's over started with a six and ends with a wicket.

Umesh bounces out Rohit

Umesh v Rohit prior to this game: 14 innings, 94 balls, 143 runs. Strike rate: 152. Most importantly, he's been out to him four times.
Today, Rohit had managed just 1 run off six deliveries from Umesh. He was fidgety and Umesh's zip off the deck from typical Test-match lengths had him pushing and prodding. Off the seventh, Rohit decided to take him on with the pull shot, only for the ball to get big on him with Sam Billings taking an excellent catch running backwards. This is the fifth time Umesh has nabbed Rohit in 15 innings in the IPL. That's also wicket No. 9 for Umesh this season.

Who is Rasikh Salam?

A strapping fast bowler from Jammu & Kashmir, who has served a two-year ban for age-fudging. In June 2019, documents proved Rasikh happened to be two years older than he claimed to be. This became public after a BCCI investigation pointed to a mismatch between two "original birth certificates" obtained from different sources. There were also discrepancies between these and his school-leaving certificate.
He spent two years away from the game. But all along, he was under the care of the Mumbai Indians. They gave him lodging, access to a sports psychologist, the best fast bowling coaches, plenty of match time in the local Mumbai circles and a high-performance academy to train at. He was wrapped him in cotton wool by the franchise; they were seemingly mindful of not allowing a young bowler to be lost to the game because of circumstances.
Salam was a net bowler for the Road Safety Series, where he bowled to the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara. For the last two years in the UAE, Salam was part of the Mumbai Indians contingent as a new bowler - living and training with the squad all through the season. At the auction, Mumbai, who didn’t bid for him, gave a huge thumbs up to the KKR table when they eventually signed him. Salam has been mentored over time by Irfan Pathan, who briefly was part of the Jammu & Kashmir team as well. He’s been in good hands. Now, the world is his oyster. Can he make up for lost time?

Knight Riders opt to bowl

Both captains have got what they wanted. Shreyas Iyer wanted to go with the trend of chasing, mindful of dew. Rohit Sharma says he wanted to bat first. He's confident dew won't be a major factor tonight.
Rasikh Salam, the former Mumbai Indians bowler, and Pat Cummins replace Shivam Mavi and Tim Southee for KKR. Mumbai have handed a debut to Dewald 'Baby AB' Brewis and Suryakumar Yadav in place of Tim David and Anmolpreet Singh.

Welcome to IPL's most lopsided rivalry

75.8 This is the win percentage Mumbai Indians have over KKR in the IPL. This is the highest win percentage for a team against an opponent.
Mumbai would love to extend this win percentage tonight. They're desperately looking for their first points of the season.
