some drama this as the slower ball dribbles past the stumps. Was looking to tuck this length ball through square leg but nearly rolled back onto the stumps off the body. Big win for the Gulf Giants to open the new season, one that has been set up by their skipper James Vince.
Giants vs Warriors, 1st Match at Sharjah, ILT20, Jan 19 2024 - Ball by Ball Commentary
At 92/0 at the halfway mark, Warriors seemed well placed to make a dash to the target in the second half. Then they sensationally collapsed, with Overton and Jordan coming into their own to help Gulf Giants, the defending champions, open with a comprehensive victory.
It was a high-scoring game alright, but one strewn with errors. It didn't make for the most gripping narrative, but the game did have its moments of brilliance. Like Maheesh Theekshana's spell, especially the carrom ball to dismiss Shimron Hetmyer. Usman Khan's cameo was enterprising. UAE's Aayan Afzal Khan held his own against the marauding Martin Guptill initially and then, finally, Jamie Overton mixed his lengths up superbly to be the pick of the bowler's on the night.
Do hang around for the presentations.
Winning captain James Vince says, "Pretty all-rounded performance, can take a lot of confidence from that. Think we were 20 above par. Tough ground to catch with the low lights but we bowled well."
Jamie Overton is the Player of the Match for his 3 for 29. "I had a good run at the BBL, it's nice to join the Giants again. Tried to hit the wicket, hit the top of off stump as much as we could. Just tried to make it hard for the batters. Trying to picking the brain of CJ [Chris Jordan], and try to keep on doing what we are doing."
Tom Kohler-Cadmore says, "Think we were 20 short with bat and ball. The Giants smashed the middle of the pitch and made us take it square of the wicket which we found difficult. When a team scores 200, you need to chase really well. We didn't, lots to improve on."
