That's that. Jumps down the track, does not get under it and gives a simple catch to Baartman at mid-off. Fortuin gets the last wicket and South Africa win the first ODI in Abu Dhabi by 139 runs.
South Africa vs Ireland, 1st ODI at Abu Dhabi, IRE vs SA, Oct 02 2024 - Ball by Ball Commentary
That will be it from us tonight. Thanks for tuning in. We will be back nice and early on Friday for the second ODI, but till then, this is me Ashish Pant signing off on behalf of Abhimanyu and Sudeep. Ciao!
Temba Bavuma, the South Africa captain: It is a good start to the series. It was a competitive score, we had to fight. Proper innings from Rickelton. The bowling was great. The conditions were in their favour. The pressure was on them. [On de Zorzi] As far as I know, he is going for a scan tomorrow. We tried to play what was in front of us. We were looking for swing and movement off the wicket. We have a nice variety. The damage was done early.
Paul Stirling, the Ireland captain: Tough defeat tonight. I think it did a couple of things which I didn't expect. It did nip around. Few disappointing things, and hope we can turn up better on Friday. When you have a side three down, we needed to take our chances. [On Hoey] I am delighted with how he went especially against a strong opposition.
Ryan Rickelton is the player of the match: When Tristan came in we were in a spot bother. We wanted to home in on our Test match skills. We score quite quickly so we knew we could catch up. It was just about getting out of that initial phase. The tail wagged nicely for us. Credit has to go to the tail. The runs at the end were invaluable.
Lizaad Williams: We obviously do a lot of analysis work. We just talked about putting in the box on the fourth stump. The wobble was more effective compared to the swing because I don't get a lot of bounce. The wobble seam was more effective. There was a bit of wind. It did give me a bit more boost.
Presentation time
10.16pm That is a clinical all-round bowling performance from South Africa as they take a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. They were led by Lizaad Williams who bowled an eight-over spell up top and sent the Ireland batters in a tizzy. He got the ball to move around and picked up three wickets early. Ottneil Baartman then got his maiden ODI wicket before Lungi Ngidi added two wickets to his tally. Eventually Ireland could only muster 132 in 31.5 overs and this will give this young South African team something to smile about after what has been a tough tour of the UAE so far.
Darted on the off stump, he defends
Flatter outside off, slices this to backward point
Oh, he's hammered that into his own foot. Fuller on leg stump, he looks for a drive and ends up hurting himself
Flatter length ball outside off, he slaps this to cover
Banged in short, he sways outside the line of that

Slower back of a length ball, he has a flash at it and misses
Oh, raps him on the chest. Young backs away, looking to give himself some room. Mulder follows him, cramping him for space and Young is caught in an awkward position
Back of a length ball outside off, he cuts this to deep third
Back of a length ball just outside off, he stands tall and pushes to point
Mulder back from around the wicket
Very full as Young misses this and the ball just sneaks past leg stump
Flatter and raps him on the pad with the ball sliding down leg once more
SMOKED! Tossed up outside off. Young charges down, gives himself a little bit of room and goes inside out over extra cover
Flatter on leg stump and raps him on the pad. But the ball was sliding down leg
What is Young doing at no. 11? Flighted on the stumps, he jumps down the track and effortlessly smashes him 89 metres over long on
Flatter on off, he just about gets his bat down in time
Full on off, defended by Hume. No five-for for Williams, but it's been a sensational performance still
Length ball on middle goes past the outside edge as Hume looks to block
Full outside off and Young plays a confident drive past cover. Bavuma at mid-off runs to his left to stop it from going past
Craig Young is the Ireland No. 11. Now Williams has three deliveries to complete his maiden ODI five-for. It's already his maiden ODI four-for!
