Yorkshire's hopes of winning the County Championship were shattered when
they were bowled out for 158 in reply to Surrey's first innings total of
356 on day two of the Division One clash at Scarborough. Surrey ended their
day at 53 for two in their second innings.
Yorkshire made a disastrous start when Alex Tudor dismissed Simon
Widdup and Anthony McGrath in the first two balls of the innings. They
were in further trouble when they lost the third wicket of Craven at
the score on just four.
A 63-run fourth wicket partnership between Darren Lehmann (66) and
David Byas (19) rescued Yorkshire from further disaster. Lehmann added a
further 39 runs with GM Fellows for the fifth wicket. Lehmann was the sixth
batsman to be dismissed at 123. Soon Tudor along with Pakistan's Saqlain
Mustaq returned to polish of the tail. Tudor ended with 4 wickets for 75
while BC Hollioake picked up three for 67 and Saqlain Mushtaq in his the
space of seven balls picked two wickets conceding no runs. Surrey with an
overall lead of 251 did not enforce the follow-on and decided to bat,
thereby making certain that Yorkshire were out of the contest.
