it's all over...drives a full ball over cover, not quite out of the middle but it gets the single they needed
England vs South Africa, 3rd ODI at London, Aug 31 2012 - Ball by Ball Commentary
Presentation time...first it's AB de Villiers: "Thought it was a good toss to win, it wasn't a 210 wicket. The top order didn't take responsibility and we came up short. Most of our senior players got in and didn't make it count, including me, I played a very poor shot."
Alastair Cook: "A lot of character was shown there. It was a really good bowling performance. You wouldn't want to chase too many more on that wicket. Eoin and Jonathan played two very good innings. It's always nice to get a first win. There were a few nerves up there. Credit to the way we batted. So to cross the line is really pleasing. Jade came in, we wanted a wicket-taker, and he took wickets for us."
The Man of the Match goes to Eoin Morgan. Fair decision. He was the only batsman to score freely on the pitch. "Tonight the pitch played consistently throughout and I could play myself in. I've been in the side for a while now and I enjoy taking the reins in the middle order."
That wraps things up for the evening. It's all square with two to play and the next match is at Lord's on Sunday. There's still cricket going on today (or tomorrow, or whenever it is) with the ODI in Abu Dhabi. So you can head over there if you like. For now, though, from Andrew McGlashan and Alan Gardner it's goodbye and thanks for joining us.
England win by four wickets and the series is level. They are also back to No. 1 in the one-day rankings. A solid performance from the home side, sparked by the bowling of Jade Dernbach who was excellent on his recall. He was backed up by Ravi Bopara and James Anderson, while James Tredwell also took two important wickets on his return to the team. With the bat, England knew all they had to do was bat out the overs and they'd win. Eoin Morgan gave the innings important impetus while Jonathan Trott played the ideal anchor knock. We'll bring you news of the Man of the Match shortly. I'd go for Dernbach, personally, as I thought he made the different with key wickets. But it could also be either Trott or Morgan.
All the fielders come up...
flicked away off leg stump down to long leg so the scores are level
speared in full at leg stump, dug out to the leg side
played off the back foot and gets a controlled outside edge to third man
drives again and this time comes off a thick inner part of the bat to midwicket
driven on the up, was wide outside off and it went in the air for a while past a diving cover but well out of reach of the fielder
outside off and left alone...scoots fairly close to off stump. That ends an excellent 10 overs from Parnell.
That ends a very solid, efficient, innings from Trott. Just what England needed this evening on a tricky surface for scoring. Home side need five more.
he won't see England home. Feels for a ball outside off going across him and gets a thin edge to de Villiers.
drives and gets a thick edge into his pads which runs into the off side
very full, forced square of the wicket to point
short ball, goes for the pull and takes the top of the pad through to de Villiers
full outside off, driven with a bit of sparkle by Patel but straight to mid-off...been a lot of hitting fielders today
full outside off, pushed square into the off side where backward point parries it
there's some aggression, picks up a length ball over mid-on and it goes two bounces to the boundary...strong shot
nicely bowled, full on off stump, hint of movement into Patel who defends
very full on middle, Trott plays across the line and works it wide of mid-on
wide outside off, Trott goes for a cut and doesn't connect...costs an extra ball and run, de Villiers not entirely impressed
he's creamed that, gave himself room outside leg and drilled his drive but straight to cover
bit of a flourish from Trott as he comes across the crease and whips this from outside off through midwicket...a mini flamingo maybe?
a full delivery on the stumps is nicely timed with a flick to mid-on...this is not ending in a flourish
