The Fire are on the board, finally, and having already been eliminated, they now take the Phoenix down with them! Shortens the length after pre-empting the charge. Baker heaves it into the leg side and gets back for two. That will not nearly be enough, though. Smiles from those in Welsh Fire colours, and they have a win at the sixth time of asking this season!
Fire vs Phoenix, 24th Match at Birmingham, Women's Hundred, Aug 22 2025 - Ball by Ball Commentary
5:46pm That will be all from us for this game. The men's game should kick off in under an hour, and you can follow it live here. Until next time, from all of us here at ESPNcricinfo, it is goodbye!
Jess Jonassen, Player of the Match: (On her all-round outing) Not too bad, to be fair. Got a bit of luck with the bat, muscled a few. Happy that we finally got some points on the board. (On hitting four sixes in a five-ball set) Can't say I would be the top of that list (smiles). Had the match-up in my favour and wanted to take the game on. Came off, does not matter how far over the rope they go (smiles). Super pleased we were able to get the job done. (On her bowling plans) I think it was a mixture of both (good lines and lengths, and mixing pace up). You have to nail our length, top of the stumps. One of those wickets, you never felt like you were in. Hard to time, unless it was a half-volley. Kind of making sure you really kept the stumps in play with changes of pace. We have been searching for it (first win) all season. Nice to see things click. We have been letting ourselves down with the bat. Nice we got a win, with some things still to improve upon. Nice to go back to Cardiff with a win today.
5:40pm A fairly commanding win for the Fire. Their batters set it up, and Ismail shone with the new ball to dent the hosts. She bagged Lamb and Kelly early, and that pegged the Phoenix back. There was a sound partnership thereafter between Voll and Perry, with Birmingham, for a while, even threatening a record-breaking heist.
That is when Jonassen came to the party, though, removing Voll and Jones off consecutive balls. Perry kept fighting and kept waging a lone battle. She also registered her first half-century of the season but it always felt like she was playing catch-up, and so it ultimately proved to be.
full on off. Baker has a tug at it and chunks it off the inside edge into her pads
Baker on strike
off stump knocked back, and the Fire are almost there! Matthews holds the length back outside off and rips through her action. The ball drops on Taylor and then spins back considerably. Taylor, having advanced, swipes at it and misses, and the ball has an uninterrupted path to the stumps thereafter!
well well! Shortish on middle and leg. Ellis shapes for the reverse and even though she has to wait for a little, she helps it towards short third to open her account
Ellis, on debut, to try her luck with the bat now
wicket number two for Matthews! Tossed up full on middle and off. Schutt advances and looks to flick this all the way. Checks her shot a little, though, and offers a regulation chance to Dunkley at deep mid wicket, who accepts the offering with glee!
Matthews to round off the game
full outside off. Taylor bunts it uppishly towards mid off and calls for the single. A better pick-up and throw might have had her in trouble
zipped in full on leg stump. Schutt advances and then plays all over it, with the ball rolling off the back leg into the off side
length outside off. Taylor comes forward and shanks it down the ground to long on
Taylor is the new batter in
taken at mid off, and Perry has to go! Hard length just outside off. A bit of extra lift, meaning that the ball hits high on the bat as Perry looks to launch it over the in-field. Elwiss seems to misjudge it for a moment but then stoops down low to pick it up inches off the turf. A stellar knock but it will, most likely, not be enough to save the Phoenix from elimination!
dropped! Shortish on the stumps. Perry marches down the track and swings it towards deep backward square leg. Griffiths gets both hands to it to her right but cannot hold on to the chance. She has, well, not had the best day in the field today
Ismail to bowl the penultimate set. The Phoenix still need 45 and a miracle to win this game
full and wide outside off. Perry charges and throws her hands at it, flaying it towards deep point
fullish outside off. Schutt takes a step down the track and heaves it towards deep mid wicket
excellent wide yorker. Perry advances and squeezes it out towards deep point
pin-point yorker outside off. Perry jams it out towards extra cover
width offered and Schutt reaches out for it, bunting it towards sweeper cover. Just a single, although Perry is back on strike now
49 off 15 and despite Perry being at the crease, this seems like a chase that has passed the Phoenix by. Davies to bowl out
into the blockhole on leg stump, and this drops on Perry late. She clinks it out towards deep mid wicket and has to settle for a single
oh! Full ball on the stumps. Perry winds up and smashes it back at the bowler. Jonassen gets her left hand to it and the ball crashes into the stumps thereafter. Schutt was inside her crease, though, so nothing doing!
pushed in very full on the stumps. Schutt digs it out towards long off and gets off the mark
straight to Ismail, and Jonassen is having a day out! Slipped in full on middle and leg. Lister has no option but to chance her arm, but cannot quite get under it enough. Off the bottom part of the bat and Ismail, stationed on the long on fence, makes no mistake whatsoever. Phoenix six down, and Jonassen has accounted for half of those dismissals!
length ball outside leg. Lister gets down on the sweep but picks out short fine leg. Dot ball!
Jonassen to bowl out. Over the wicket
