finishes it with a six! The most amazing final over and West Indies are World T20 champions for the second time! Stokes goes the distance, he's out on his feet and the West Indies players are out on the field, charging for the middle - this soared into the stands at deep midwicket and Brathwaite let out a primeval roar before being hugged by his team-mate Samuels
11.10pm: The fire is burning bright in Babylon tonight. West Indies receive their trophy and DJ Bravo is leading the way with a rendition of "Champion". That was an emotional sign-off from Sammy, railing against the boards he feels haven't supported them, the critics who had written them off. They began their campaign with a win over England and they have ended it in the same victorious fashion, chasing their way to glory, six-hitting the life out of the opposition and dancing off with the spoils. England pushed them every step of the way under the Kolkata lights before Carlos Brathwaite wrote his name across the sky. I'll wrap with a few more of your messages - thanks, as ever, for your company. From Alagappan and myself, it's goodnight from me, and goodnight from him.
Ketan Sharma: "With all the troubles this team has gone through... This win for West Indies is fairy tale movie stuff. "
"Wow ..just wow," gasps Kev. "Sammy really let his heart speak!"
"Cheer up England... You just equaled Sri Lanka's record of loosing most world cup finals !!" KW kicks the downed men.
And finally, MRINAL MOHAN: "This world cup was a parttyyyyy!!!!" It's time to party on, people. Everybody in time with the music: "Champ-ion, Champ-ion!"
Brydon's report should be your first stop from here and we'll have plenty more reaction, analysis and video up on the site soon. Thanks for keeping us company over the last few weeks. We'll do it all again in, ooooooh, 2020? Stay classy and see you around. Bye!
10.55pm: Anyway, it's time for the presentations... Here's England captain Eoin Morgan: "Congratulations to the West Indies, they were better. Huge highs and lows for us. Never sure going into the final over. We were certainly in the game, put ourselves in a position to win the game. We didn't have enough runs on the board, it was a really good batting surface, maybe 180-90 was par. [Badree] He's a fantastic bowler, he got two early wickets, the rebuilding allowed us to put something on the board and the bowlers got us close. We showed an immense amount of character in the tournament, not quite done enough to win it. I truly believe this is only the start of something special. [Stokes] It's not his fault, we're all in this together, we enjoy our wins - and the pain will be shared tonight."
Marlon Samuels is named Man of the Match for his unbeaten 85, just as he was four years ago in Sri Lanka: "I know about finals, when I come to finals, I turn up for the team. All respect to the England players, we want to move from strength to strength - this is for the Caribbean. If we get a good start, then I can step on it, we lose wickets early so it's different. I didn't say much [to Brathwaite] other than swing and swing hard. This is for Shane Warne." Bit of a parting pop from Marlon... Spicy.
Virat Kohli is named Man of the Tournament, although he's not there to collect the trophy. The crowd will make do with giving Sourav Ganguly another huge cheer.
West Indies captain Darren Sammy: "Firstly I want to thank the almighty. We have a pastor in the team in Andre Fletcher, we keep on praying. Really happy for this win, it's something we'll cherish for a long time. We have a few matchwinners, nobody give us a chance, every game somebody stepped up - good to see Carlos play like that in his debut World Cup. Shows the T20 depth we have in the Caribbean, hopefully we will continue to improve. People were wondering if we would play this tournament, we had issues with the board, Mark Nicholas called us players with no brain. But all of us came together, these 15 men put adversity aside, play this type of cricket in front of such passionate fans. It was tremendous. I want to thank the coaching team, Phil Simmons. We had a new manager in this tournament. Got to give credit to the entire team here. This is for all the fans in the Caribbean... I don't know when I'm going to be playing for West Indies again, I want to thank my team, thank my coaching staff. This is for the CHAMPIONS!"
10.50pm: Jumping Jehoshaphat... Four sixes in a row to win a World T20 final. I think Carlos Brathwaite is going to enjoy himself at the IPL. West Indies have Sinatra-ed their way to the title, the first team to win two World T20s. It's fair to say England performed well above expectations in this tournament, not least in coming that close to defending 155 - but they will be feeling thoroughly gutted at the way things finished. I think Stokes might even be permitted a free swing at his locker.
"Why Eng did not finished the last over that WI would make it 6 out of 6 and break the record...." That would have been cruel and unusual, Rauzatullah.
"So England has now lost 3 world cup finals to West Indies..." You're not wrong, Aditya. You think they'd be used to it by now...
Here's the demolisher, Carlos Brathwaite: "Want to give God thanks, that was an amazing knock from Marlon. He took responsibility and played a fantastic knock. Can't really express how much of a top knock that was. The U-19s did it, the girls did it, and now us."
Curtly Ambrose says they never doubted they would get over the line, even with 19 needed from the final over. And who's going to question Curtly?
"What happened you ask ? Braithwaite happened..." hoots HarishVaranasi, with some justification.
"Guptill started the tournament with a six off the first ball, Braithwaite finishes in kind. Cricket wins again with this tournament." You're conveniently ignoring the qualifying round, Sid, but I'll let you off since the adrenaline is flowing...
maz Raja: "Actual Afghanistan won the t20 WC. Because windiest only beaten in this tournament by Afghanistan." Gotta love Afghanistan fans.
Here's Aditya John Bin: "Other than England, can't think of any other cricket playing nation which is not feeling overjoyed about the 3 world cup victories for the windies... They bring joy to the sport."
"Gayle who?" chuckles Sparsh
10.35pm: OMG. What an incredible finish, that will go down through the ages as one of the great finals. West Indies were pushed all the way and in the end had to do it in the most West Indies way possible. They back themselves, no matter the odds, and Carlos Brathwaite has weaved himself vividly into the tapestry with that knockout innings. The WI players are doing the "Champion" dance in the middle, I think Brathwaite is lying on his back surrounded by his team-mates. That was bonkers. And just as with West Indies' victory in 2012, Marlon Samuels was the rock at the centre of it all.
"What just happened?" Good question, Saurabh.
"Feel sorry for Stokes" Another common sentiment, from Tharun. That, by the way, was the most runs scored to win off a final over in a T20I, beating Hussey's pounding of Ajmal in 2010.
Robert: "And I thought Jordan had won it by keeping Samuels off strike..." You and several others, I reckon.
Woe is England, woe is Stokes. Joy is West Indies - they need 1 to win, with three balls left. Carlos Brathwaite has just become a national hero
SIX MORE! Would you believe it? You had better believe it! West Indies are doing a jig in the dugout, not quite the "Champion" dance but they are pretty much there... That looked like a mishit but it sailed several metres back over long-off this time
Forget a Hussey, a Brathwaite might do... 7 from four now
smeared over long-on, back-to-back sixes from Brathwaite! The crowd are going nuts, Stokes looks shellshocked, again it wasn't quite full enough and he rammed it back over long-on
That brings it down to 13 from five...
"West Indies needs a Mike Hussey here!" squeals Syed Murtaza Ha
Brathwaite starts the over with a six! Poor ball from Stokes, half-volley on leg stump, Brathwaite heaves across the line and clears the rope at deep backward square leg
So, it's come to this. The final over, the reckoning. WI need 19 off six balls... This is it, folks. Time for a hero
"Brilliant comeback from Jordan," hollers Ashwin (not that one)
dot ball, squeezed under Samuels' bat! Full and wide and just what England desperately needed - Samuels loses the strike and WI will need to find the ropes in the final over!
hits his mark again, full on off stump, sliced over the covers and it's just one
England leave fine leg back for Brathwaite and his ice cream scoop... 20 off eight
goes full on leg stump as Samuels moves to leg, punches one down the ground to long-on
"I still see Samuels century!" Cripes, Shahzad, he's closing in... This is now the highest individual score in a WT20 final. But will it be on the winning side?
Jordan holds his nerve, hurls down another thunder bolt, squeezed into the covers for one
full outside off, this time Samuels can't get under it, one down the ground
Long-off goes out now
Rahul: "India was in similar situation against Australia and Kohli pulled that off. Can Samuels will do something like Kohli? Difference was number of wickets."
smashed down the ground, Samuels clears the infield and there is no one at long-off to cut it off!
Jordan to bowl, West Indies need one of their cannons to fire at the last again...
That boundary keeps West Indies in it, 27 needed off the final two. Jeepers!
scooped for four to long stop! Brilliantly done from Brathwaite, with the pressure mounting, head down moving across his stumps, got the ramp in position and got it away for four
"Another wicket is needed by England now," yodels George Macphers
superb yorker from Willey, full on leg stump, can only squirt one to backward point
pitched up, as it has to be, squeezed off the legs and Willey hares after it, slides and throws... Misses but it's just a single for WI
And still the rate rises...
fullish around off stump, Brathwaite makes room to hit over cover, gets a good connection... but Moeen pulls of a terrific running stop on the boundary to prevent four
pitched up, on the stumps, swats at it and the ball deflects off the pads for a leg bye
starts with a full toss, bunted down the ground for a couple
David Willey stays on, so Stokes won't bowl out. Morgan has a hunch... 38 off 18
"Where is the logic. Jordan has the highest economy rate so far. Wouldn't it be wise to go with either Root or Ali. Gardner - thoughts?" He's the designated death bowler, Jason. Been that way throughout
unerring stuff from Jordan, dug out towards mid-on, again the throw comes in - would Samuels have made it? Jordan couldn't gather, but it would have been close
"Lot depends on Samuels now. Can he pull champion dance for his team." The $64m question, Karthik
goes full and even wider, Samuels was set to the leg side, swings and misses
Jordan fires the ball in full outside off, Brathwaite is waiting, he sets himself to drive inside out and hammers it... but a brilliant diving stop at cover keeps them to one
follows him as he steps to leg, swings hard and squeezes out one to midwicket
