Moeen, Lyth available to play in Championship

England have made Moeen Ali available to play in the forthcoming round of the Championship, as well as four of the six Yorkshire players taken to the West Indies. Moeen played the second and third Tests after recovering from a side strain but was noticeably rusty, with his offspin put under pressure during the defeat in Barbados.

Of the XI who played at Kensington Oval, nine have been made unavailable by the ECB. Jonathan Trott, who retired from international cricket after the series, will discuss his involvement with Warwickshire, while Moeen will be able to work on his red-ball bowling in Worcestershire's visit to Edgbaston.

Moeen, who made his debut last year and is still establishing himself as an international spinner, will not, however, be free to play against the touring New Zealanders from next Thursday, in a match that has had its first-class status removed. England begin a two-Test series against New Zealand the following week.

Yorkshire's Adam Lyth, who is in line to take Trott's place as opener, will have just the Championship fixture against Hampshire to find some form after four weeks of carrying drinks. Lyth last played in England's warm-up match in St Kitts, though he began the season with a century in the Champion County match.

Yorkshire made a request during England's tour for Adil Rashid to be sent home early, although it was rebuffed. Rashid and Jonny Bairstow were subsequently added to England's party for the ODI against Ireland on Friday; Yorkshire have chartered a private jet to bring Rashid, Bairstow and Tim Bresnan back from Dublin in time to play against Hampshire, with James Vince also taking the flight to be able to play at Headingley on Sunday.

Liam Plunkett and the other non-playing member of the West Indies squad, Durham's Mark Wood, have been given permission to play county cricket, as has Kent's James Tredwell, who was selected for the first Test in Antigua before being replaced by Moeen.

The ECB has also made clear that the majority of England players will not take part in the opening round of the NatWest T20 Blast. The tournament begins on May 15 but a request has been made that England players named in the squad for the first Test, starting on May 21, will be rested. The Test squad is expected to be named next Thursday, May 14.
