Wisden's review of Sri Lanka v United Arab Emirates, Asia Cup, 2008

15-Apr-2009
At Lahore, June 26, 2008 (day/night). Sri Lanka won by 142 runs. Toss: Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka 290-9 (50 overs) (M. L. Udawatte 67, D. P. M. D. Jayawardene 61, K. Weeraratne 40, K. M. D. N. Kulasekara 37; Zahid Shah 3-49); United Arab Emirates 148 (36.3 overs) (Amjad Ali 77; B. A. W. Mendis 5-22). Sri Lanka 2 pts. Man of the Match: B. A. W. Mendis. One-day international debuts: Alawi Shukri, Aman Ali, N. Fernandes (UAE).
Sri Lanka lost Kumar Sangakkara for 0 in the first over to Zahid Shah, who took 3-49 for the second match running, but then Udawatte and Jayawardene put on 114 in 14 overs. The tail swelled a rather disappointing batting effort to 290, easily enough to contain the UAE, for whom the wicketkeeper Amjad Ali (one of six Pakistan-born players in the 15-man squad) made 77 from 79 balls, hitting 12 fours, but his team-mates managed just four boundaries between them. The last six wickets fell for 15, Mendis taking the last five for two runs in 14 balls.
