Australia v England

At Melbourne, February 13 (day/night)

15-Apr-2000
At Melbourne, February 13 (day/night). Australia won by 162 runs. Toss: Australia.
Humiliation ended an England tour which promised so much but delivered so little. Shattered after their late-order disappearing act in the first final, they had nothing left to offer, going down by 162 runs, three short of their heaviest one-day defeat.
Delayed by rain for a day, the final attracted barely 20,000 fans. England buckled to 13 for four by the fourth over as McGrath reached 27 wickets for the series, passing Dennis Lillee's 25 in 1980-81. Lehmann, just omitted from the Test squad for the West Indies, set up Australia's 272, striking 71 off just 75 balls and adding 112 in 21 overs with Martyn. England skipper Stewart seemed shattered when he finally arrived for his last press conference of the trip. "When you lose by that much in a one-day game, it is obviously a very bad loss. But I don't think we really batted well throughout the whole tournament," he said.
Man of the Match: D. S. Lehmann. Men of the Series: G. D. McGrath and G. A. Hick.
Attendance: 20,413.
