The captain of the Indian team for the Asia Cup tournament in Dhaka will be selected either on May 1 or 2. According to information available from the BCCI sources in Calcutta, the board has decided to postpone the selection of the team and the captain because of the ongoing betting controversy. The captain and team will be selected only after the meeting between the Union Sports Minister Surjit Singh Dhindsa and BCCI officials and former captains of the Indian team. Similarily, the executive committee meeting of the BCCI scheduled for April 28 has been deferred to May 20.
Meanwhile, former Test cricketer Arun Lal has stated that only an enquiry conducted by the CBI can reinstate the honour of the cricketers. "Even common cricket fans are openly stating that some of the Indian cricketers are involved in betting. This is a very sorry state of affairs and only a thorough investigation by the CBI can erase the doubts that have crept into the minds of the people. Earlier, I never believed that betting existed in cricket. Even when the news of Hansie Cronje appeared in the newspapers, I termed it as rubbish. But his confession has opened my eyes. Now, it is not possible for me to disagree with the fact that some cricketers are involved in some way or the other with bookies and match fixing," said Arun Lal.
