The Clubs' XI dodged the rain to score an emphatic victory over the Independents' XI in the annual Tony Turner Trophy match, played at the Hong Kong Cricket Club on 18th September 2005.
The match, a precursor to the Sunday League season, has been completely washed out in 2004 and 2003 and it looked like the same outcome would result for the 2005 fixture. Fortunately the rain abated sufficiently to allow an abbreviated match to be played.
Making full use of the damp conditions, the Clubs' XI bowlers skittled the Indpendents' XI for 129, with Mark Fuzes claiming 3-28. No batsman in the Independents' team managed to score over 30 as the Clubs' bowlers held the upper hand throughout. In reply, the Club's batsmen didn't have as much trouble and reached their target for the loss of only two wickets. Skipper Mark Eames lead the way with an unbeaten 59.
In the Women's match played at Kowloon Cricket Club, the Club's XI scored a solid 177-2 from their 35 overs with HKCC's Natasha Miles hitting an unbeaten half century and KCC's Renee Montgomery a quick fire 47. In reply, the Independents' XI batters struggled against some good bowling and lost wickets at regular intervals. However they kept pace with the required run-rate and when the heavens opened with the score on 88-7 from 18 overs, forcing an end to the day's play, the Independents XI were declared the winners on a better run rate.
Incidently, the mens and womens Clubs' XI teams were skippered by the husband and wife pairing of Mark and Sarah Eames respectively.
