Anderson blasts it beyond Kings XI's reach

Having powered Delhi Daredevils to 188 with a slog-overs blitz, Corey Anderson played his part with the ball as well in inflicting a 51-run defeat upon Kings XI Punjab

Star turn

Delhi Daredevils were 120 for 4 after 15 overs, and when Varun Aaron dismissed Rishabh Pant off the first ball of the 16th, Kings XI Punjab may have hoped to keep the home team down to somewhere between 160 and 170 on a slowish Feroz Shah Kotla pitch. In the end, though, they were left chasing a whole lot more - 189. The highest successful chase at this venue, across all IPL seasons, was 188.
Chris Morris, fresh off smashing 38 off nine balls against Rising Pune Supergiant, began Daredevils' late-overs charge, clattering 16 off 8 before falling in the 18th over. Pat Cummins joined in the fun with an unbeaten 12 off 6. But the bulk of the damage was inflicted by Corey Anderson.
Anderson had replaced Carlos Brathwaite in Daredevils' previous game. Now he showed why; starting the 19th over batting on 14 off 15 balls, he swiftly changed gears, clubbing Axar Patel's left-arm spin for successive sixes. Then, back on strike for the last two balls of Daredevils' innings, he smacked Sandeep Sharma back over his head for four and then pulled him for six to finish on an unbeaten 39 off 22 balls.
He wasn't done just yet. Coming on to bowl his left-arm seam with Kings XI already struggling in their chase, he ensured they would have no late joy, bowling three overs full of accurate yorkers - with just a hint of late reverse - one of which pinned David Miller plumb in front.

The wow moment

A short ball from a left-arm spinner bowling around the wicket to a left-hander, fired a long way outside off stump. It was the last ball of the 19th over, and Axar Patel delivered it with the singular purpose of denying Anderson a hit into his favourite on-side areas. Anderson had to go against the angle, and the length didn't favour him either, but he reached out anyway and gave it everything. The flat-bat hit met the ball close to the bottom of Anderson's bat, but he swung with enough bat-speed to clear the leaping fielder at long-on.

The numbers

  • Daredevils scored 68 off the last five overs - their joint second-best tally in that phase in all IPL seasons. Their best, 82, came in their previous match, against Rising Pune
  • Of Anderson's 39 runs off 22 balls, 31 off 10 came against Axar Patel and Sandeep Sharma
  • Anderson's overall strike rate in the IPL is 138.15 - it climbs to 173.24 in the last five overs

What they said

"It was the kind of wicket where it was tough to get going. Sanju [Samson] and Sam [Billings] set a great platform. It was good to have that platform to go from. We thought 160 might have been a reasonable target during one of the time-outs and in the end it probably was."
