Division 1
Yorkshire batted on allowing Wood to reach an excellent unbeaten century, and for their total to pass 500 before calling a halt to the carnage. Facing a deficit of 269, Derby offered little resistance. White and Hoggard soon dismissed the openers, Di Venuto promised to build a decent innings before White had him caught, and then Darren Gough cut the heart out of the innings with a fine second spell. Only Bailey, left unbeaten at the end on 54, showed much fight, and Yorkshire won comprehensively by an innings and 79 runs, with a day to spare. Yorkshire's joy will be tempered that centurion Vaughan has indeed broken a finger and is out of contention for the Zimbabwe Test later in the month
Hampshire had no answer to the bowling of Andy Caddick, whose 7/64 (to go with 5 wickets in the first innings), had them all out for just 126, leaving Somerset just 40 to win. Caddick's form must be reassuring for the England selectors, as much is expected of him this summer. Only former Somerset player Giles White could resist Caddick as he carried his bat for a remarkable 78* (62% of his side's total). Caddick's performance was all the more impressive in the absence of two other Somerset bowlers through injury. Somerset lost the wicket of Jamie Cox in reaching their target. Shane Warne had a dismal Championship debut, completing a pair (both 3rd ball) and taking just one wicket in the match.
England contracted Chris Schofield showed his all-round caapability with a stylish 66 as Lancashire batted on at Old Trafford, reaching a 200 plus lead before finally dismissed. Anil Kumble took a couple of late order wickets, but conceded 93 runs. Glen Chapple reminded the selectors of his ability with the new ball taking three wickets, as Leicestershire slumped to 155/5 at the close, still 68 behind.
Division 2
Nottinghamshire took control of their match against Essex, thanks to a spirited showing from the tail, and some hostile bowling. The last four wickets put on 130, with Tolley and Franks recording half-centuries, and gained a first innings lead of 76. Frank soon got into the act with the ball, having Hyam caught behind, and later dismissing Irani for 20. Five Essex bats passed twenty, but only Law progressed on to a half century before he was bowled by Stemp. Millns also bowled well, and Essex lead by just 118 with three wickets remaining, and all the established batsmen gone.
Middlesex also are well on top against Northants, despite a century from Rollins. He and Penberthy (59) added 108 for the sixth wicket. Rollins hit Fraser for a big six to reach three figures but Fraser (4/49) got his revenge next ball, having him caught at slip from a beauty. Northants needed 2 runs from number 11 Malcolm to save the follow-on but trailed by 147. Middlesex looked for quick runs, with Strauss unbeaten on 84* at the close. Leading by 315, Middlesex will plan an early declaration to try and force the win.
Facing a massive 500 plus total from Warwicks, Glamorgan openers James and Elliot put on 203 for the first wicket, both completing centuries. Elliot's 117 was on his debut for Glamorgan, but after he was caught and bowled by Powell, no batsman was able to stick with James, who is still there on 165*. Ashley Giles earned the award for some tight bowling with 3 economical wickets, but with only one day to play, it looks as though a draw is on the cards.
Universities
Oxford had a few scares before playing out time for a draw at the Parks. Porter's 67 still left them well short of avoiding the follow-on, and they lost quick wickets when they batted again. Some obdurate defence, maybe not enthralling to watch but effective, saved the match. Garland (6* from 77 balls) and Janmohamed (5 from 45 balls) staved off defeat with an unbroken 7th wicket stand.
