DERBYSHIRE v YORKSHIRE: With Munton unable to bat after being hit on the head during pre-match practice, Derby totaled 303 when the ninth wicket fell. Byas and Craven may not be as an evocative pair of names as Sutcliffe and Holmes but they had an excellent, although at times lucky, century opening partnership, dominated by 19 year old Vic Craven, who made his maiden half-century in his second first-class innings.
As so often happens one partner followed the other on 112, and Blakey fell for a duck with no further addition to the score. When Harden followed him with the score on 116, and then Cork captured the wickets of Wood and Hutchinson, Yorkshire had squandered an excellent start. Lehmann was still there at the close on 38*
LEICESTERSHIRE v HAMPSHIRE: After rain delayed the start, Leicestershire quickly polished off the Hampshire innings, stranding Aymes on 74*. Warne showed why he was in the side (having made it abundantly clear it was not for his batting) by snapping up Stevens and Ward, the latter well stumped by Aymes. Smith and Habib stopped the rot and at close of play Leicestershire are 89/3.
County Championship Division 2
NOTTINGHAMSHIRE v GLOUCESTERSHIRE: More rain delayed the start at Trent Bridge, where Gloucestershire had been reduced to 29/5 the previous day. Skipper Alleyne (68*), accompanied by Jack Russell (32* from 143 balls), found batting much easier, and in the best stand of the match so far added over 100 runs, taking them through the abbreviated day without losing a wicket.
SUSSEX v WORCESTERSHIRE: Only 13 overs were possible at Hove, where Sussex advanced to 51/1 losing the wicket of Montgomerie to McGrath in the process.
At Edgbaston, however no play was possible between Warwickshire and Essex.
University Matches
Glamorgan duly completed a routine innings win over Oxford University, with Smalley (31) and Porter (50) allowing them at least to reach three figures after being 18 for 4. Thomas and Parkin both took 4/14.
Rained saved Cambridge University, as resuming at 10/3 they lost three further wickets before play was halted for the day, Quentin Hughes making a determined 36*.
