Courtney Browne retires

The former West Indies wicketkeeper and captain of Barbados, Courtney Browne, has retired from all forms of cricket. Browne, 34, led Barbados earlier this month to the final of the KFC cup, but lost to Guyana.

Browne cited personal and work-related reasons in a letter sent to the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) on Tuesday.

"It's a tough spot to fill - Courtney was an outstanding leader and he worked well with the other players," Joel Garner, Barbados's selector, told BBC Sport. Garner and his co-selectors will meet today to discuss his replacement.

Browne, born in London, played 20 Tests for the West Indies, most recently against Pakistan in June but failed to cement his place within the team. He also played 46 one-day internationals, and was reselected for the 2004 ICC Champions Trophy in which he played such a crucial role to beat England in the final at The Oval, 13 months ago.

He finishes his first-class career with 4914 runs at an average of 27.76, with 439 catches and 47 stumpings.
