Easterns wrap up domestic double

Easterns secured the 2006-07 Logan Cup title with a 146-run victory over Centrals inside three days at Kwekwe Sports Club. The victory means that they cannot be overtaken by Westerns and gives them the domestic double, coming six weeks after they won the one-day Faithwear Cup.

In a low-scoring match, Easterns gained a vital first-innings lead of 72, largely thanks to Tino Mawoyo's 90, with Brighton Mugochi grabbing 5 for 69. Centrals stumbled to 136 in reply to Easterns' 208, with Timycen Maruma doing to bulk of the damage with 4 for 32. Easterns looked far from settled when they batted for a second time, Mawoyo once more leading the way with 47 in a score of 152. Set a target of 225, Centrals succumbed with barely a whimper, being bowled out for 78 with Maruma and Prosper Utseya sharing six wickets.

Westerns came into the final round needing a win to have any chance of securing the title. As it was, they handed Southerns their first win of the tournament, going down to them by 36 runs at Masvingo. In another low-scoring match, Westerns' batting let them down badly after two decent performances with the ball. Keith Dagembwa, who ended the leading wicket-taker with 33, took 10 for 128 to leave Westerns chasing 199, and when they reached 84 for 0 they looked to be coasting. But Kamungozi, who finished with 6 for 57, ripped through the middle order as six wickets fell for 35 runs. The tail wagged, but not enough, and Westerns, who started with three back-to-back wins, were left with nothing.

The match between Kenya Select and Northerns at Harare Sports Club finished in a thrilling draw with Northerns' last pair at the crease with two runs needed when bad light ended play. Click here for a full report.
