†ENGLAND v INDIA 1982

At Leeds, June 2

15-Apr-1983
At Leeds, June 2. England won by nine wickets. Following a violent hailstorm the previous afternoon, lasting for only twenty minutes but leaving cars parked round the ground with water up to their hubcaps, the first of the two Prudential Trophy matches had a controversial beginning. Having pleaded in vain that the pitch was unfit for play at the time appointed for the start - the covers had leaked during the storm - India's captain lost the toss and led his side to a heavy defeat. With the ball moving about, as much because of the heavy atmosphere as any dampness in the pitch, India reached 193, after being 68 for five, thanks to a punishing innings of 60 in 37 balls by Kapil Dev. England were steered home by Wood, ably supported by Tavaré and the South African, Lamb, making his first appearance for a representative English side. The match ended with lightning flashing across the sky.
Wood was Man of the Match. The attendance was 10,000, the takings £47,000.
